James Calado Leads in Ferrari Triumph: Initial Highlights from 2025 FIA World Endurance Championship in Qatar

James Calado has set the pace in the initial free practice session of the 2025 FIA World Endurance Championship season, clocking a 1:42.123 lap at the Lusail International Circuit for the Qatar 1812km. Behind the wheel of the #51 Ferrari 499P, Calado demonstrated exceptional skill and precision, outpacing his closest rival, Sebastien Bourdais, by a significant 0.232 seconds.

Bourdais, driving the #38 Cadillac V-Series.R, kept up the momentum that Cadillac and its new affiliate JOTA had exhibited in the preceding week’s Prologue testing. However, it was Calado’s fellow Ferrari driver, Nicklas Nielsen in the #50 Ferrari, whose performance was a mere 0.042 seconds behind Bourdais, adding to the thrill of the competition.

Toyota’s representative, Brendon Hartley, in the #8 Toyota GR010, managed to secure the fourth spot on the timesheet. Meanwhile, the first BMW to make it into the top five was driven by Raffaele Marciello in the #15 BMW M Hybrid V8.

Further down the list, Will Stevens navigated the #12 Cadillac to the sixth position, while the fastest Porsche, driven by Kevin Estre, claimed the seventh spot. The second fastest BMW, the #20 with Robin Frijns at the helm, had its best lap to finish eighth. Filling out the top 10 in the Hypercar category were Phil Hanson in the satellite #83 AF Corse Ferrari and Ferdinand Habsburg in the #356 Alpine A424.

However, the session was not without its hiccups. Alex Riberas, driving the #009 Aston Martin Valkyrie, was forced to halt due to an unexplained technical malfunction. The vehicle had to be transported back to the pits on a flatbed. In their debut WEC free practice session, both Valkyries lagged behind, finishing 17th and 18th.

In the LMGT3 category, Ben Barnicoat led the field in the #78 ASP Lexus RC F GT3 with a 1:55.623 lap time. Hot on his heels were the two TF Sport Corvettes, with Daniel Juncadella in the #33 just edging out Charlie Eastwood in the #81.

Augusto Farfus in the #31 WRT BMW M GT3 Evo and Jose Maria Lopez in the sister #87 ASP Lexus secured the fourth and fifth positions respectively.

As the adrenaline continues to build, audiences worldwide are eagerly anticipating FP2, scheduled to begin at 16:50 local time, or 13:50 UTC. The first free practice has already set the stage for an exhilarating season of the World Endurance Championship, with each driver vying for the top spot.
