The motorsports world is buzzing with controversy once more following Max Verstappen’s decision to potentially boycott future F1 season-launch events in England. This bold stance has been sparked by an unsettling incident during the F1 2025 launch at London’s O2 Arena, which saw Verstappen and Red Bull team principal Christian Horner being booed by the predominantly British audience.

The incident has drawn criticism from various quarters, including Dutch pundit Tom Coronel. He expressed sympathies for Verstappen’s position, saying that true motorsport fans would not engage in such disrespectful behavior. The booing incident tarnished what should have been an exciting day, where all ten teams gathered to unveil their car liveries for the upcoming season.

The backlash was so severe that when Verstappen and his new team-mate Liam Lawson took to the stage, they were the only drivers who did not address the crowd. This decision was made by Red Bull in the event’s early planning stages, aiming to avoid any insipid remarks following extensive media commitments throughout the day.

In an interview with RaceXpress, Verstappen’s father, Jos, confirmed his son’s disinterest in attending similar events in England in the future. He stated, “Max has no appetite for that, to be booed like that in front of 25,000 people [sic].” He further questioned the purpose of such events when they descend into rampant negativity, adding that such behavior is not fitting for the sport.

In response to the incident, Coronel expressed his confusion on the RN365 podcast, describing the situation as “very strange”. He pointed out that while it’s natural for fans to have a certain level of nationalistic preference, the behavior displayed at the event was far from what one would expect from true motorsport enthusiasts.

He said, “Where is this coming from? It’s early season, a positive moment. And then such a negative wave comes over it. I don’t understand it at all! As a motorsport fan, you don’t do this, do you?”

As we look forward to the F1 2025 season, Verstappen is poised to chase his fifth consecutive Drivers’ Championship. If successful, he would establish a new record at Red Bull, surpassing Sebastian Vettel’s streak of four consecutive victories. Despite the controversy surrounding the season launch, fans worldwide await with bated breath to see if Verstappen can truly make history this year.
