VIDEO – Unveiling the Future of F1: Mercedes W16 Takes First Laps in Pre-Season Bahrain Circuit

The Mercedes W16, the Formula 1 team’s racing car for the 2025 season, has made its much-anticipated debut on the Bahrain International Circuit. This first outing comes hot on the heels of the launch of the W16, which was revealed to the world on Monday with a series of detailed renderings. This new machine marks the advent of a fresh chapter for Mercedes, in the wake of superstar driver Lewis Hamilton’s sensational switch to rival team Ferrari.

The task of piloting the W16 rests on the shoulders of George Russell and teenage phenom Kimi Antonelli. Team boss Toto Wolff has set a clear objective for the pair: to compete for wins with more regularity. Wolff expressed optimism about the team’s off-season progress but also acknowledged that the real test will be the season-opening Australian Grand Prix.

Russell had the privilege of putting the first laps on the W16 at the Bahrain track on Tuesday morning, a day before pre-season testing was set to kick off. Both Russell and Antonelli followed a scheduled program designed to test the car’s systems while also getting comfortable with their new racing machine.

The W16 is the result of an intense development program aimed at addressing the shortcomings of its predecessor, the W15. The new car sports a host of changes, including a reworked nose, modifications to the front wing, an overhauled floor and rear suspension, and a redesigned shark fin engine cover.

James Allison, Mercedes’ Technical Director, explained that in this fourth year of the current chassis regulations, finding significant lap time improvements has become more challenging. Therefore, the team’s focus has been on bettering the areas where they struggled last season.

According to Allison, the main goals were to eliminate the W15’s reluctance to turn in slow corners and address the erratic tyre temperature that led to inconsistent performance from one session to another. He expressed satisfaction with the team’s progress over the winter and looks forward to seeing how the W16 fares against the competition.

In a sport where fractions of a second can make all the difference, Mercedes’ efforts to refine and improve their car could be the key to reclaiming their leading position in the 2025 F1 season. Only time will tell whether the W16 will be able to steer Mercedes back to the front of the pack.
