2025 Formula 1 Season: Red Bull’s Reign at Risk Amid Internal Tensions and Uncertainty

As the 2025 Formula 1 season draws near, the motorsport world watches with bated breath to see if Red Bull can maintain its supremacy, or if the king of the track is about to be dethroned. Notably, ex-F1 driver Jos Verstappen has aired his apprehensions about the team’s future. He suggests that if Red Bull’s RB21 car does not live up to the hype, it could spell disaster for the current champions.

Red Bull’s reign, with the young prodigy Max Verstappen leading the pack, has been unchallenged for years. But recent internal strife and evolving team dynamics cast a shadow of doubt over the powerhouse’s long-term stability. With design guru Adrian Newey’s impact potentially on the decline and an increasing sense of unease backstage, Verstappen Sr. predicts that 2025 could be a decisive year for the team.

The potential downfall of Red Bull’s dominance is a topic of heated debate in Formula 1 circles. The team has enjoyed a significant edge over its competitors since the 2022 regulation changes. However, Jos Verstappen cautions that this upper hand might not be permanent. He warns of critical decisions ahead for the team if the RB21 fails to match the dominance of its predecessors.

Behind the scenes, internal politics add to the growing pressure on Red Bull. Despite its on-track triumphs, there are rumors of discord among key players like Christian Horner, Helmut Marko, and Max Verstappen. Such instability could chip away at the team’s competitive edge.

According to Jos Verstappen, if Red Bull’s dominance wanes, the political rifts within the team could worsen, potentially impacting performance. “As soon as a team stops winning in Formula 1, the pressure mounts, and fissures start to appear,” he noted.

Moreover, the future of Max Verstappen with the team might come under scrutiny if the RB21 fails to impress. He is contracted until 2028, but dissatisfaction with a less competitive car could alter the scenario.

Adrian Newey, whose legendary designs have powered many of Red Bull’s championship victories, has been a vital asset. However, questions loom large over his future involvement in the team’s car designs. If he steps back, Red Bull could find it difficult to maintain their technical advantage against rivals like Mercedes and Ferrari.

Jos Verstappen emphasizes that a decline in Newey’s involvement could be a turning point for the team. “It will be intriguing to see how they manage if Newey reduces his role,” he stated.

Red Bull’s possible downfall draws parallels with Mercedes, whose dominance ended with the 2022 regulation changes. Jos Verstappen posits that a similar fate could befall Red Bull if they fail to stay ahead of the game. With the 2026 engine regulations on the horizon, Red Bull will need to keep up the pace while planning for the future to avoid a period of decline like Mercedes.

Max Verstappen’s future could significantly influence Red Bull’s fate. Rumors suggest that if the team’s performance dips, he might consider other options, with Mercedes in the search for a long-term replacement for Lewis Hamilton.

Jos Verstappen refrained from commenting directly on his son’s future but emphasized Max’s desire to win. “Max loves racing, and he wants a car that can compete for victories. If Red Bull continues to deliver, there’s no problem. But if things change, who can predict what will happen?” he said.

As Red Bull gears up for the 2025 season, the pressure to retain its dominant position is immense. If the RB21 proves as powerful as its predecessors, Red Bull could maintain its winning streak. However, signs of weakness could trigger significant changes within the team and across the F1 landscape.

With the uncertainty surrounding team politics, the future of key personnel, and Max Verstappen’s long-term commitment, the stakes are high for Red Bull in 2025. The season will be pivotal for the reigning champions, and whether they maintain their status or start to falter is yet to be seen.
