Despite his three-race stint in the 2024 Formula 1 season, Haas driver Oliver Bearman continues to see himself as a newcomer in the high-octane world of F1. The 19-year-old British racer, who made a remarkable debut standing in for Carlos Sainz at Ferrari during the 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, is gearing up for his first full-fledged season in the sport.

Bearman’s awe-inspiring performance at his debut race, where he managed to secure a seventh-place finish and successfully fend off seasoned drivers like Lewis Hamilton and Lando Norris, had the world of motorsport buzzing. His successful run, however, did not end there. He went on to replace Kevin Magnussen twice during the 2024 season at the Azerbaijan and Sao Paulo Grands Prix, further solidifying his reputation as a promising talent.

Being the youngest driver to score points on debut and to compete for Ferrari, Bearman had the motorsport community sit up and take notice. His exceptional talent earned him a multi-term contract with Haas last summer.

As the anticipation builds around the team’s car launch at the F1 75 live event, Bearman, a Formula 2 graduate, opened up about the upcoming season. He shared his thoughts with select media outlets, including Motorsport Week, emphasizing his self-perception as a rookie in the F1 scene. Despite his brief experience, he still feels he’s got a lot to learn, with several tracks yet unexplored and a full season yet to be completed.

Interestingly, Bearman disclosed a small hiccup in his past – failing his first driving test for not stopping at a stop sign. This revelation came in light of fellow rookie Andrea Kimi Antonelli passing his driving test. Bearman, who has been a part of the Ferrari Driver Academy since 2022, humorously noted the absence of stop signs on race tracks, explaining his minor transgression.

Bearman’s journey in single-seater racing began five years ago in the ADAC Formula 4 Championship when he was just 15. His forthcoming rookie season is one of anticipation and excitement, albeit tinged with a few understandable nerves. Under the mentorship of Team Principal Ayao Komatsu, Bearman is set to partner with Esteban Ocon for the 2025 season, aiming to emulate the achievements of former drivers Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg.

When quizzed about his feelings leading up to the inaugural race in Australia, Bearman admitted to a few nerves but dismissed any extra pressure. He reasoned that the pressure won’t be any more intense than his previous experiences in Jeddah, Baku, or Brazil. He is focused on gradually proving his worth on the track, one step at a time.

As the countdown to the 2025 F1 season begins, the motorsport world watches with bated breath, eager to see what this ostensibly ‘rookie’ driver will bring to the high-stakes world of Formula 1.
