Oscar Piastri has set a lofty ambition for his third Formula 1 season: to clinch the world championship title. But is he ready to take on the challenge? The answer lies in his ability to overcome competitive hurdles, notably outperforming fellow McLaren driver, Lando Norris.

Piastri’s talent and prowess in the sport are undisputed. With two grand prix victories under his belt, including a triumphant run at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Piastri has demonstrated exceptional racecraft. His audacious pass on Charles Leclerc in Azerbaijan, at a moment when his team was advising caution, speaks volumes about his sharp instincts and determination. His performance at Monza, where he outmaneuvered Norris, further highlights his potent combination of skill and ice-cold composure. As we approach the 2025 season, Piastri is laser-focused on beating Norris, despite his public reticence on the matter.

However, Piastri acknowledges that there’s room for improvement in his game. Despite putting up a valiant fight in the previous season, he fell short of Norris’s performance, ranking as the second-best McLaren driver. The area where this discrepancy was most evident was qualifying, where Piastri was, on average, 0.163% slower than Norris. This translates to a time difference of 0.144 seconds. Furthermore, there were instances where Piastri struggled to maintain momentum over the race weekend, even when he was in top form, he often couldn’t match Norris’s race pace. The challenge Piastri now faces is to consistently replicate his best performances.

According to Piastri, the key to improving his consistency lies in resilience. He must learn to adapt swiftly over race weekends, particularly when they start on a less-than-positive note. He also needs to be better prepared for the season, focusing on specific driving opportunities. Piastri is determined to work on his qualifying skills, but insists that improvement extends beyond just “qualifying better”. He believes that by addressing certain specific areas, he can enhance his overall performance and gain confidence.

Resilience for Piastri also means being able to swiftly identify and rectify any issues related to set-up or driving technique. While Piastri has been commended for his quick adaptation during free practice sessions, he now needs to take swift corrective measures when things aren’t going as planned. His growing experience will undoubtedly aid this.

Piastri has also emphasised the need to better understand the Pirelli tyres. Despite making considerable progress, he admits that there’s always more to learn, given the intricacies of the tyres. Piastri’s teammate, Norris, with his deep understanding of the tyres, serves as a tough benchmark for him.

Norris’s adaptability and intelligence as a driver, as well as his experimental approach to driving style and technique, present another challenge for Piastri. Especially with the current generation of cars, there are significant lap time gains to be made in braking technique and steering lock trade-offs. Piastri’s ability to handle a pointy car could prove to be an advantage if he can effectively control the rotation. He needs to refine his technique and expand his driving toolkit to better navigate these heavy, ground-effect cars.

As Piastri gains experience, his performance is expected to improve. Having learned valuable lessons from the 2024 season, he should be better equipped to optimize his performance and extract the maximum potential from himself and his car.

In conclusion, Piastri’s current position requires him to focus on maximizing his strengths and minimizing his weaknesses. His aim should be to consistently deliver his best, thereby matching or even surpassing Norris’s speed. If Piastri can achieve this in a competitive car, there’s no doubting his potential to realize his dream of becoming a world champion. His racecraft, resilience, and ruthlessness, after all, are the key ingredients in the recipe for his success.
