Mercedes backs down on plan to become fully electric by 2030.

Mercedes-Benz has announced that electric vehicles will continue to be more expensive than their combustion models in the coming years, and therefore is preparing for a reduction in demand for electric vehicles in the near future, and in this sense, it will abandon the goal of exclusively selling electric vehicles in the main markets by 2030.

According to “Automotive News Europe”, the German brand has lowered its expectations for the demand for electric vehicles and made it clear that it is ready to update its range of combustion engines by the next decade.

In addition, on Thursday, Mercedes reduced its medium-term prospects for electric models, and now expects that 100% electric vehicles will represent half of sales in the second half of this decade, contrary to the initial forecast that this goal would be achieved by 2025.

The company expects the percentage of fully electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to remain stable, between 19% and 21% of sales by the end of 2024.

It should be noted that Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius warned at the end of 2023 that Europe may not be ready by 2030 to receive a fully electric range, as several studies have shown that customers are reluctant to purchase 100% electric models due to a lack of charging infrastructure and the high prices of electric models.
