Helmut Marko Admits Max Verstappen Could Leave Red Bull Due to ‘Performance Clause’

Red Bull Racing advisor Dr. Helmut Marko has acknowledged that Max Verstappen’s current contract does not entirely bind the Dutch driver to the team until 2028. Verstappen, currently a four-time world champion, has been the subject of widespread speculation regarding his future, with rumors suggesting that teams like Aston Martin and Mercedes are eyeing the 27-year-old star for 2026.

While Verstappen’s contract runs through 2028, Marko admitted that there are performance clauses that could allow the Dutchman to leave the team if Red Bull fails to maintain its competitive edge. Marko did not delve into the specifics of the clauses but stated that he was not concerned about such a scenario, particularly with Red Bull’s upcoming in-house power units set to keep the team in strong contention.

“There are performance clauses. But let’s assume that we are not really at a disadvantage in terms of the engine,” Marko told OE24.

Despite this, Marko emphasized that Red Bull is fully focused on securing a fifth consecutive world championship title with Verstappen, a feat they were unable to achieve during Sebastian Vettel’s tenure at the team. “We want the 5th world championship title in a row, that is what we are fully focused on. We didn’t manage that with Vettel,” said Marko.

Red Bull, which will face stiff competition from Ferrari and McLaren in the upcoming season, remains determined to provide Verstappen with a competitive car. If they fall short, however, Verstappen might consider seeking opportunities elsewhere when his contract expires.

As the 2025 season begins, Red Bull and Verstappen are laser-focused on maintaining their dominance at the front of the grid. However, with the future still uncertain, the presence of the performance clause has added a layer of intrigue to the Dutchman’s long-term commitment to the team.
