Christian Horner Slams Aston Martin’s £1 Billion Bid for Max Verstappen: ‘Eye-Watering Amount’

Christian Horner, the boss of Red Bull Racing, has laughed off reports suggesting Aston Martin is preparing to offer Max Verstappen an eye-popping £1 billion to switch teams in Formula 1. The speculation, which has been swirling in the paddock, has stirred significant interest as Verstappen continues his pursuit of a fourth consecutive Drivers’ Championship with Red Bull. However, Horner is adamant that Verstappen remains firmly committed to his team, which he has been a part of since 2014.

Despite Verstappen’s ongoing success and dominance, rumors about his potential departure have persisted. These rumors have been fueled by some of the recent internal turmoil at Red Bull, including an investigation into Horner’s conduct, followed by the departure of several long-standing senior figures within the team. On top of that, Red Bull experienced a dramatic drop in competitiveness, even threatening Verstappen’s title hopes, as the team finished third in the Constructors’ Championship.

Aston Martin’s Alleged Bid: £1 Billion for Verstappen

However, the most audacious of these rumors came in the form of a report last month, which claimed that Aston Martin was attempting to lure Verstappen with a massive £1 billion offer. The British team, aiming to challenge the front runners in Formula 1, allegedly shared with prospective sponsors their intention to sign Verstappen, capitalizing on his status as one of the best drivers on the grid. But Horner is having none of it.

“I know you guys have all got column inches to fill over a winter period, but a billion dollars, it would be an eye-wateringly large amount of money,” Horner told the media at the F1 75 season launch event in London. While the figure may be impressive, Horner remains confident that Verstappen is happy at Red Bull, provided the team continues to deliver a competitive car for him to drive.

Verstappen’s Happiness at Red Bull

According to Horner, Verstappen is deeply embedded within Red Bull, both personally and professionally. “Max is very happy in the environment that he’s in. He’s grown up in the team. He has a great relationship with the team, the engineers, and the technicians and everybody that he works with,” Horner said. “It’s down to us to provide a competitive car and continue to give him the platform to be able to achieve the results that he has over the last almost 10 years.”

With Verstappen under contract with Red Bull until 2028, Horner is confident that the four-time World Champion will remain with the team as long as they continue to provide him with the equipment to fight for titles.

Could Aston Martin Really Afford a £1 Billion Bid?

While Horner refrained from commenting on whether Aston Martin could afford such a vast expenditure on a single driver, he made it clear that Red Bull is in a strong financial position to fend off any rival offers. “I can’t comment on other team’s finances, but Red Bull are relatively well-positioned compared to others within the pit lane,” he noted, underscoring Red Bull’s competitive strength both on and off the track.

Verstappen Responds: Aston Martin Contact for GT3, Not F1

Verstappen himself has also weighed in on the rumors. The Dutch driver confirmed that he has had contact with Aston Martin, but clarified that it was about a potential GT3 project, not a Formula 1 move. “The only contact that I had with them was about GT3 for this year. That’s it,” Verstappen explained. “There’s not much to say really because there isn’t anything.”

He went on to further address his future plans, explaining that he is focused on starting his own sports car team for the upcoming season. “It’s not me personally driving, but I’m starting my own team for this year with the drivers, so of course, some things seem to be in place,” he added.

Conclusion: Verstappen’s Future Still Lies with Red Bull

Despite the ongoing speculation, both Verstappen and Horner have firmly dismissed the idea of a potential switch to Aston Martin in the near future. With Verstappen’s contract at Red Bull in place until 2028, and his deep connection with the team, it’s clear that the Dutch driver is focused on defending his title and continuing his dominance in Formula 1. The £1 billion offer from Aston Martin remains nothing more than a fantasy for now, as Verstappen’s future continues to be firmly tied to the Red Bull team.
