The ‘Ryan Curse’ Looms Over Daytona: Will Blaney Escape the Superspeedway Hex?

When it comes to Daytona, one thing is certain—expect the unexpected. NASCAR’s most unpredictable battleground has shattered dreams, delivered last-lap chaos, and even sent drivers airborne in terrifying wrecks.

But for Ryan Blaney, this year’s Daytona 500 carried an extra layer of eerie tension—one that had nothing to do with aerodynamics or race strategy. Instead, it stemmed from a bizarre Reddit post that left Blaney fans spooked before the green flag even dropped.

A fan’s chilling warning: “Your fate is sealed.”

In a post that quickly gained traction among NASCAR circles, one fan revealed a terrifying pattern that had emerged over the last four years—one tied directly to the name Ryan.

“It looks like your fate is sealed. All I’m asking is that you give me your hospital room so I can come apologize face to face.”

The post was meant as dark humor, but given NASCAR’s history at Daytona, it hit a little too close to home.

The so-called “Ryan Curse” stems from two of the most horrific airborne crashes in recent memory, both of which occurred when this particular fan attended a race with his girlfriend:

  • Ryan Newman (2020 Daytona 500) – Leading on the last lap, Newman was slammed into the wall, flipped, and violently hit at full speed by Corey LaJoie. He was rushed to the hospital with critical injuries before making a miraculous recovery.
  • Ryan Preece (2023 Coke Zero Sugar 400) – Preece’s Ford launched into the air, flipping ten times in one of the most violent crashes in recent history. He was hospitalized for observation but escaped without major injuries.

With Newman retired and Preece absent from the 2024 Daytona 500, the only Ryan left in the field was Blaney. And with the same fan and his girlfriend in attendance once again, superstition took over.

Blaney’s Daytona history: So close, yet so brutal

If there’s any driver who understands Daytona’s fine line between glory and disaster, it’s Ryan Blaney.

The 2020 Daytona 500—the same race Newman’s crash occurred—also featured one of Blaney’s most painful losses. In a dramatic photo finish, he came up just 0.014 seconds short of Denny Hamlin, one of the closest margins in race history.

Blaney has been a superspeedway specialist, consistently running up front at Daytona, but as NASCAR fans know, being in contention means being in the danger zone.

So when this “Ryan Curse” theory spread like wildfire, Blaney fans weren’t laughing—at least, not entirely.

“If Blaney goes airborne, we’re banning you from races permanently,” one fan replied.
“I hope you stay away from the toaster and the bathtub this time,” another joked, referencing the agony of Blaney’s past near-misses.

Can Blaney break the ‘Ryan Curse’?

Superstition or not, Daytona has a way of delivering chaos—and history has shown that no driver is safe.

Blaney entered the 2024 Daytona 500 as a favorite, with a strong Ford package and an aggressive driving style tailor-made for superspeedway racing. But as past events have proven, Daytona doesn’t care about favorites.

Will Blaney finally capture his long-awaited 500 victory? Or will fate—and the so-called Ryan Curse—strike again?

One thing is for sure: if Blaney finds himself flipping through the air, that Reddit fan might have some serious explaining to do.
