Franco Colapinto’s Future Set: Williams Confirms Argentine Will Return After Alpine Stint

From Dream to Drama: Colapinto Reflects on Rollercoaster F1 Debut with Williams

Franco Colapinto (ARG) Williams Racing. Formula 1 World Championship, Rd 17, Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Saturday 14th September 2024. Baku City Circuit, Azerbaijan.

Franco Colapinto’s Formula 1 journey just took another twist—one that all but guarantees his return to Williams.

Despite securing a move to Alpine for 2025, Williams boss James Vowles has now made it clear: Colapinto is coming back.

🚨 Vowles’ Bold Statement:

“Ultimately, Franco is my driver that I want back in that car.”

Why Did Williams Let Colapinto Leave?

Colapinto made waves in late 2024 when he replaced Logan Sargeant at Williams for the final nine races of the season. His impressive debut—including scoring points in just his second race—immediately made him a hot commodity on the F1 driver market.

However, with Carlos Sainz taking the Williams seat in 2025, there was no space left for Colapinto on the grid.

Rather than force him into a reserve role, Williams strategically allowed him to sign with Alpine—a team desperate for fresh talent and reportedly looking to shake up its driver lineup.

Vowles explained:

“The reason why we did this is that I wanted him to be racing in ’25 and or ’26. His best chance to get on the grid was with Alpine.”

How Long Will Colapinto Stay at Alpine?

That’s the big question—and it seems nobody knows for sure.

“After a period of time, he’ll return to Williams. That period of time is not a line set in stone where I can look you in the eye and say it.”

But what’s clear is that Colapinto isn’t Alpine’s long-term project—he’s still part of Williams’ future plans.

Will Alpine Drop Jack Doohan for Colapinto?

There’s already speculation that Alpine could swap Colapinto in for Jack Doohan mid-season—but Alpine boss Oliver Oakes has pushed back on that narrative.

“It’s been a little bit harsh on Jack, some of the stuff that was written by the keyboard warriors. He’s getting his fair crack at it next year.”

However, if Doohan struggles, Colapinto will be waiting in the wings—a move that could accelerate his timeline back to Williams.

What Does This Mean for Williams’ Future?

🔹 Colapinto isn’t gone for good—he’s just getting experience elsewhere.
🔹 If a Williams seat opens up in 2026, expect him back.
🔹 If Alpine keeps him for longer, Williams still sees him as a long-term project.

🚀 The Bottom Line: Williams just loaned out one of the most exciting young drivers in F1—but they aren’t letting go of him. Colapinto is still Williams’ guy.
