NASCAR Controversy: Rain Ends CJ McLaughlin’s Daytona Dreams as NASCAR Rulebook Sparks Backlash

CJ McLaughlin came to Daytona with high hopes—but he left with heartbreak.

After four failed attempts to qualify for the NASCAR Xfinity Series season opener, his fifth shot was supposed to be different. He had a new team, fresh sponsorship, and a competitive No. 92 Chevy with DGM Racing. But when Mother Nature and NASCAR’s rulebook intervened, McLaughlin never even got a chance to fight for his spot.

Instead of lining up for the United Rentals 300, he was left on the outside looking in.

NASCAR’s Controversial Rulebook Call Sparks Backlash

Rain had already plagued Speedweeks at Daytona, washing out multiple practice and qualifying sessions. NASCAR tried to push through Xfinity Series qualifying on Saturday, but just 12 cars had completed their laps before the skies opened up again.

🔹 Initially, officials delayed the session, hoping to dry the track.
🔹 As the delays mounted, they scrapped the session entirely.
🔹 Instead of rescheduling, they went straight to the rulebook—setting the lineup based on 2024 owner points.

🚨 The Result? CJ McLaughlin, JJ Yeley, and Carson Ware never even got a chance to qualify!

For McLaughlin, this was more than just another failed attempt. It was a gut-wrenching setback after months of preparation and effort.

McLaughlin’s Disappointment: “We Didn’t Even Get a Chance”

McLaughlin had poured everything into making this Daytona dream a reality. Teaming up with DGM Racing and Main Street Auto, he had finally found a competitive ride to challenge for a solid finish.

💬 “The DGM Racing team are true racers, and it already feels like home working with them,” McLaughlin said before the race. “With a great race team and great sponsors behind me, I’m looking forward to making the most of this opportunity at such a special place.”

Instead? The rain and rulebook robbed him of even making a lap.

📉 McLaughlin has 50 career NASCAR national series starts, including 45 in Xfinity and five in the Truck Series. He was determined to better his previous highest finish of 19th, but Daytona simply wasn’t in the cards.

Winners and Losers of NASCAR’s Decision

Biggest Loser: 🏁 CJ McLaughlin, JJ Yeley, Carson Ware – Stripped of their shot without a single lap turned.

Biggest Winner: 🏆 Justin Allgaier – The defending Xfinity Series champion lucked into pole position thanks to JR Motorsports’ owner points.

Other Beneficiaries:
✅ Brandon Jones & Sam Mayer (JR Motorsports) – Locked into strong starting positions.
✅ Taylor Gray – Will start on the front row.
✅ Austin Hill – Three-time defending United Rentals 300 champion starts inside the Top 10.

Final Starting Grid – Top 10:
1️⃣ Justin Allgaier
2️⃣ Taylor Gray
3️⃣ Christian Eckes
4️⃣ Austin Hill
5️⃣ William Sawalich
6️⃣ Sheldon Creed
7️⃣ Brandon Jones
8️⃣ Sam Mayer
9️⃣ Jesse Love
🔟 Carson Kvapil

The United Rentals 300 is scheduled to go green just after 5:00 PM ET—if the weather holds up.

McLaughlin’s Next Move: Redemption or Roadblock?

With Daytona out of reach, McLaughlin now faces a frustrating reality. The road ahead won’t be easy, but if he can secure more opportunities with DGM Racing, he may yet get his shot at redemption.

Was NASCAR right to use last year’s owner points to set the lineup? Or should they have rescheduled qualifying to give McLaughlin and others a fair shot?

💭 Drop your thoughts below—was this the right call, or another NASCAR controversy in the making?
