Toto Wolff Backs FIA President’s Call for Swearing Crackdown After Verstappen’s Controversial Comments

With Lewis Hamilton departing for Ferrari, the Mercedes era now belongs to George Russell—and Toto Wolff believes his young star is ready to seize the moment.

The 27-year-old Brit has shown flashes of brilliance, but in 2025, he won’t just be fighting for podiums—he’ll be expected to fight for the title.

There’s just one problem: Mercedes needs to build a car that’s actually capable of winning it.

“George is ready to win the title, but we have to provide him and Kimi [Antonelli] with a fairly fast car,” Wolff admitted.

That’s the catch. Russell may be championship material, but is Mercedes?

Mercedes’ Struggles in the Ground-Effect Era

Since the introduction of ground-effect regulations in 2022, Mercedes has fallen from dominance to inconsistency.

Gone are the days of unmatched Silver Arrows supremacy—instead, the team has spent the last three seasons chasing Red Bull, McLaren, and even Ferrari.

Wolff admitted the team still hasn’t fully cracked the formula.

“These cars are very complicated, it is not easy to find the right way to develop them, and so far we have only succeeded in a few cases,” he said.

This has been the core issue since the radical regulation change in 2022—Mercedes’ once-dominant engineering team has struggled to extract consistent performance.

And with Red Bull still strong, McLaren resurgent, and Ferrari armed with Hamilton, the 2025 title fight won’t be easy.

Russell’s Championship Credentials: Is He Ready to Lead Mercedes?

Russell’s one and only F1 victory came at Brazil 2022, and while he has consistently matched Hamilton in qualifying and race pace, he hasn’t yet had a true championship-caliber car.

Now, the spotlight is on him to prove he can handle the pressure of being Mercedes’ No. 1 driver.

Unlike his early seasons, there’s no seven-time world champion alongside him—just an expectation that he can deliver.

Can he handle that? Wolff thinks so.

“George is ready to win the title.”

But to do that, Mercedes needs to hit the ground running—because 2025 could be one of the most competitive seasons in years.

Will Mercedes Finally Be Competitive Again?

It’s been four seasons since Mercedes last fought for a championship, and Wolff isn’t making any bold predictions just yet.

“I don’t want to speculate too much about how we are going. We will see how things will go in the tests.”

Pre-season testing will be the first real indicator of where Mercedes stands.

  • Is the 2025 challenger finally competitive?
  • Can they match Red Bull, McLaren, and Ferrari?
  • And most importantly, will Russell get the car he needs to fight for the title?

If Mercedes has solved its development woes, Russell could emerge as a genuine contender.

If not? 2025 could be another season of frustration.

For now, the waiting game begins.

Final Thought: Russell’s Moment of Truth

With Hamilton gone, Mercedes is officially Russell’s team.

Toto Wolff believes he’s ready to be world champion—but if the car isn’t up to the task, it won’t matter.

The 2025 season is make-or-break for both Russell and Mercedes.

Will it be the start of a new Silver Arrows era? Or another season spent chasing shadows?

The answer is coming soon.
