Alex Albon isn’t losing any sleep over Carlos Sainz’s arrival at Williams for the 2025 Formula 1 season. In fact, he’s embracing the challenge, confident that it’s an opportunity for personal growth rather than a source of stress.
After rebuilding his reputation at Williams following a tough stint at Red Bull alongside Max Verstappen, Albon has comfortably outperformed his recent teammates—Nicholas Latifi and Logan Sargeant. However, Sainz represents his biggest challenge yet, with the four-time race winner fresh from a strong season with Ferrari.
Despite the step up in competition, Albon is not fazed. He sees Sainz’s presence as a positive challenge and a chance to prove himself against one of F1’s most respected drivers.
Albon on Facing Sainz: “It’s a Great Challenge”
Asked whether Sainz’s arrival increased the pressure, Albon dismissed the notion:
“Maybe I look at it differently to other people, but I see it as: the better my teammate, the better I can go up against someone who’s got a big reputation, who’s just come from a very strong year.
I think that’s a great challenge to have, but also a positive outlook for me. I believe in myself and I’m happy to go up against anyone.”
Albon’s confidence reflects his steady improvement at Williams, but with Sainz regarded by many—including Williams team boss James Vowles—as one of the top four drivers on the grid, the bar will be raised in 2025.
Learning from Sainz’s Work Ethic
Sainz has earned a reputation as one of F1’s hardest-working drivers, known for his meticulous approach, strong feedback, and ability to extract the most from his car. That’s something Albon is already noticing behind the scenes.
“I think that he’s a bit of a… you could call it a thinking driver. I would put myself in the same box in that sense.”
Albon believes Sainz’s experience at Ferrari will bring valuable insights to Williams, enhancing the team’s development process.
“He’s clearly bringing a lot of information from Ferrari—different ways of working and optimizing their package.
Obviously, it’s different to Williams, but it’s very interesting, not just for the team, but for myself as well.”
Williams’ Next Step: Can Albon and Sainz Elevate the Team?
Williams has been in a rebuilding phase under James Vowles, with a major hiring spree, increased investment, and infrastructure upgrades designed to push the team back up the grid.
With Albon’s race craft and consistency combined with Sainz’s work ethic and technical feedback, Williams could have one of the strongest driver pairings in years. The question is: Can they turn that into meaningful progress on track?
For Albon, beating Sainz would be a career-defining achievement—but he knows the real battle is against the rest of the field.
“It’s about working together, pushing the team forward. If we do that, both of us benefit.”
The Albon vs. Sainz matchup could be one of the most intriguing intra-team battles of 2025. Let the Williams resurgence begin! 🚀
