Cody Ware Caught in Daytona 500 Controversy: Inspection Failure, Nepotism Accusations, and a Nightmare Start to His Return

The Daytona 500 is supposed to be the ultimate fresh start for any driver returning to the NASCAR Cup Series, but Cody Ware’s comeback is already off to a disastrous start. Before the green flag has even waved, Ware’s No. 51 Rick Ware Racing Ford has failed tech inspection, leading to his race engineer being ejected ahead of the Duels.

🚨 THE PENALTY RUMORS ARE SWIRLING!
According to rumors circulating in the NASCAR garage, more penalties could be coming—potentially before Ware even gets a chance to officially start his first Cup Series race since 2022.

Ware’s Return Already Under Fire: “Nepotism” Accusations Cloud His Cup Comeback

Even before this latest controversy, Ware’s return to the Cup Series was already under scrutiny. The 29-year-old was announced as the full-time driver of RWR’s No. 51 Ford after replacing Corey LaJoie in the offseason. However, many fans and insiders questioned whether Ware truly earned the opportunity—or if it was merely a case of family connections paving the way.

💬 Accusations of nepotism have surrounded Ware for years, as he races for his father’s team, Rick Ware Racing (RWR). The team is one of the smallest operations in the Cup Series, often struggling to keep pace with larger teams like Hendrick Motorsports, Team Penske, and Joe Gibbs Racing.

Now, his failed tech inspection only adds fuel to the fire, making his already uphill battle at Daytona even steeper.

Just How Bad Was Ware’s Qualifying?

📉 QUALIFYING RESULT: DEAD LAST.
Ware was already facing long odds of making the Daytona 500 field based on his performance alone. But his qualifying attempt on Wednesday only made matters worse.

🏁 Ware clocked in a lap of 51.835 seconds, making him the slowest driver in the entire field.
🚗 He was 2.617 seconds off pole-winner Chase Briscoe—a massive gap at a superspeedway where fractions of a second matter.
🏎️ Even JJ Yeley—driving for the underfunded NY Racing Team—outqualified him.

Ware’s only shot at making the field now rests on his performance in the Duels, but after losing his race engineer, that task just got even harder.

NASCAR’s Penalty Crackdown: Could Ware Face More Punishment?

🧐 WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
According to an Instagram post by “nascarrumournotlagia,” penalties could be coming for Ware’s team.

🔍 The post hinted at an alleged infraction involving “lead” in the car, which suggests possible weight distribution or ballast manipulation—a serious violation in NASCAR.

NASCAR officials have not yet announced additional penalties, but if Ware’s team is found guilty of further rule-breaking, he could:

❌ Lose crucial practice time ahead of the Daytona 500.
🔄 Be forced to start at the rear for the Duels or the 500 (if he qualifies).
🚫 Face potential point deductions or fines.

Given that Ware’s car was already slow, a further setback could make his chances of racing on Sunday nearly impossible.

Final Take: Is Cody Ware’s Return to Cup Racing Already a Bust?

Cody Ware’s return to the Cup Series was always going to be a tough road. But failing tech inspection, struggling for speed, and facing potential penalties before the season even starts? That’s about as bad of a start as it gets.
