After Nissan backed out of the merger with Honda, it was now the turn of Foxconn’s president, Young Liu, the main production partner of Apple, to state that the company is interested in cooperating with Nissan, rather than acquiring the Japanese automaker.
Recall that Nissan decided to withdraw from the discussions it had been holding with Honda since late 2024 regarding the merger between the two car manufacturers, due to disagreements over the project.
According to the Japanese economic publication, Nikkei, Nissan will abandon the memorandum of understanding under which it had been negotiating with Honda Motor since late December, due to the inability to reach a consensus on the terms of the merger.
In this sense, Foxconn is now seen as the best solution for Nissan, should the company acquire Renault’s stake in Nissan. However, Young Liu has already announced that his company is not looking to acquire Nissan but is open to purchasing a stake if that step becomes necessary for cooperation with the automaker.
“If there is an operational need, we will consider that possibility,” Liu told reporters, making it clear that “buying a stake is not our goal — our goal is cooperation.” It is worth noting that Renault owns 36% of Nissan.
