After three seasons in the shadows of Red Bull and Ferrari, Mercedes is gearing up for a major resurgence in 2025—and George Russell just dropped some key hints about what’s coming.

With one final season before F1’s radical 2026 regulation overhaul, Mercedes is going all-in on its W16 challenger, armed with upgrades that have been years in the making. But will it be enough to bring them back to title contention?

Russell: 2025 Car Will Feature ‘Pipeline’ Upgrades From 2024

Despite early struggles in 2024, Mercedes found a breakthrough mid-season, securing three wins in five races—a surge largely credited to an overhauled front wing that unlocked hidden potential in the W15.

However, as the year progressed, performance stalled again, leaving the team digging deeper for solutions.

Now, according to Russell, the upcoming W16 will feature innovations that have been waiting in the wings for years.

🗣️ “There have been a lot of… I wouldn’t say changes directly from last year to this year, these are things that have been in the pipeline for a long time, items that we couldn’t quite put on the car in 2024 but we’ve been working on them for a long time.”

Mercedes, desperate to close the gap to Red Bull, appears to be loading the W16 with aggressive upgrades they couldn’t implement last season—either due to technical constraints or development timelines.

The 2026 Regulation Dilemma: How Will Teams Balance Development?

2025 isn’t just another season—it’s the last chance for teams to perfect their current designs before F1 undergoes a dramatic transformation in 2026.

📌 Smaller, lighter, and more nimble cars—a stark contrast to today’s ground-effect era.
📌 Major power unit revamp—the MGU-H will be scrapped, and 50% of power will come from electric energy.
📌 Active aerodynamics return, further reshaping the competitive landscape.

This leaves Mercedes—and every other top team—with a tough choice:

🤔 Do they keep pushing in 2025 to challenge for wins, or shift focus early to 2026’s all-new formula?

Russell admitted he’s eager to see how this strategic battle unfolds:

🗣️ “Throughout this year, with the thought of 2026, whether people keep developing or not is going to be quite intriguing.”

Mercedes’ 2025 Game Plan: Faster Upgrades, No More Playing Catch-Up

A major issue for Mercedes in 2024 was the timing of their upgrades—they were consistently bringing major updates later than their rivals.

According to Trackside Engineering Director Andrew Shovlin, this is about to change.

🗣️ “The whole thing of development in Formula 1 is fixing problems, and can you fix them quicker than your competitors? That’s how you get to the front.”

Shovlin admitted that Mercedes was often a few races behind their main rivals in deploying major upgrade packages:

🗣️ “If you look at when we brought our updates compared to our main competitors, we were often bringing our big package a couple of races later.”

Now, the team is hinting at a more aggressive upgrade strategy, meaning we could see a more dynamic Mercedes in 2025, rather than one constantly playing catch-up.

Can Mercedes Finally Challenge Red Bull Again?

🚨 The Key Questions for 2025:

✅ Will Mercedes’ ‘pipeline’ upgrades finally unlock a car capable of beating Red Bull?
✅ Can they deploy updates faster than their rivals?
✅ Will they balance 2025 development while preparing for 2026’s new era?
✅ How will George Russell handle leading the team with Lewis Hamilton gone?

With Carlos Sainz arriving at Williams, Max Verstappen still in peak form at Red Bull, and Ferrari looking stronger than ever, Mercedes must be flawless in execution if they want a shot at the title in 2025.

One thing is certain—this is their last chance to return to dominance before Formula 1 undergoes its biggest transformation in a decade.
