George Russell’s Bold Claim: ‘I’d Be 2024 Champion in a McLaren or Red Bull’

The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team has spent the last three seasons chasing shadows, never quite recapturing the dominance that defined their eight consecutive constructors’ titles. Since the ground effect era began in 2022, the Silver Arrows have struggled to match the might of Red Bull and even Ferrari, fighting an uphill battle to regain their once-unshakable grip on Formula 1.

But 2025 could be their final shot.

With massive regulation changes looming in 2026, this season will likely be Mercedes’ last chance to build a competitive car under the current rule set. And at the center of it all? George Russell, now the undisputed leader of the team following Lewis Hamilton’s blockbuster move to Ferrari.

The W16 will be the team’s final attempt at getting it right before the 2026 reset—but will it be enough to challenge for the title?

Russell: ‘We’re Optimistic’ About the W16

Speaking at Mercedes’ new Adidas partnership launch, Russell shed light on the team’s approach for 2025, emphasizing that key improvements have been in the works for a long time.

🗣️ “There have been a lot of… I wouldn’t say changes directly from last year to this year. These are things that have been in the pipeline for a long time, items that we couldn’t quite put on the car in 2024, but we’ve been working on them for a long time.”

Russell believes these delayed upgrades could finally unlock the car’s potential, but there’s always the lingering uncertainty of what Red Bull, McLaren, and Ferrari have been cooking up.

🗣️ “We’re optimistic it will be a good step in the right direction. You obviously never know what your rivals are going to have done.”

The 2025 development race will be unique, as teams must decide whether to keep developing their cars or shift resources to the 2026 regulations.

🗣️ “Throughout this year, with the thought of 2026, whether people keep developing or not is going to be quite intriguing.”

The Russell Era: No More Hamilton, No More Excuses

For the first time in his Mercedes career, George Russell is THE guy. With Lewis Hamilton gone and Mercedes betting on rookie Kimi Antonelli, Russell now carries the full weight of the team’s expectations.

The 26-year-old has made it clear—he’s ready to fight for the championship if the W16 delivers.

🗣️ “Absolutely. I feel ready; everybody in the team is so motivated.”

While Mercedes’ recent struggles have been frustrating, Russell sees every setback as a learning experience.

🗣️ “I feel that these years have sort of been trial and error, but every time we’ve had a chance to win, we’ve won. And that’s what gives me the optimism that if we do have the car, we can achieve it.”

With two victories in 2024 (Las Vegas and Austria) and a controversial disqualification in Belgium, Russell proved he can capitalize on opportunities—but can he lead Mercedes back to the top?

🗣️ “We’re working as hard as we can for it to be this year, but everybody is fully on board, and it’s going to be an exciting season.”

Can Mercedes Deliver One Last Championship-Winning Car?

The W16 is Mercedes’ final shot at redemption before 2026 ushers in an entirely new era of F1.

✅ If they get it right, Russell could challenge for his maiden title.
❌ If they get it wrong, Mercedes risks another season in the midfield wilderness.

For a team that once set the gold standard in F1, 2025 is about legacy, redemption, and proving they can still fight at the top.

Will George Russell seize his moment? Or will Mercedes fade further into F1 obscurity?

The Silver Arrows’ last stand begins now.
