NASCAR is shaking things up in 2025, and one of its boldest changes has just received a major endorsement from none other than Dale Earnhardt Jr. The Hall of Famer has thrown his full support behind the new fastest lap bonus point, a rule that could become a game-changer in the fight for championship glory.

The latest tweak to the rulebook will award an additional point to the driver who clocks the fastest lap in each race—an evolution of the most laps led bonus that once rewarded race dominance. For Earnhardt Jr., this isn’t just another minor change—it’s a competitive revolution.

Earnhardt Jr. Calls It a ‘Brilliant’ Move

On a recent episode of his podcast, Dale Jr. Download, the two-time Xfinity Series champion didn’t hold back his excitement.

“I love this! These little things that push drivers to be better are really cool. Fans joke when we say, ‘Every point matters,’ but it really does. And this new rule is just another proof of that,” Earnhardt Jr. said.

The former Cup Series superstar believes this single bonus point could be the difference-maker in the season-long playoff battle. A driver who consistently clocks the fastest lap could stockpile points, giving them a crucial edge when it matters most.

A Strategic Weapon for Playoff Contenders?

With NASCAR’s playoff format being as cutthroat as ever, Earnhardt Jr. sees this change as a new way for competitors to gain an advantage.

“This is a point that’s out there for these guys to go after. If you win multiple fastest laps, that could really change your seeding for the playoffs—or even be the difference in making it,” he explained.

The introduction of the rule across the Cup, Xfinity, and Truck Series adds another layer of intrigue to the battle for championship positioning. Earnhardt Jr. admitted that while he’s excited about the new rule, he still misses the days of additional rewards for leading a lap or dominating the race’s lap count.

“I miss the ‘most laps led’ bonus and the lap leader bonus. Those were great incentives,” he reflected.

Will This Change Shake Up the 2025 Season?

NASCAR’s constant rule evolutions have sparked debate over the years, but Earnhardt Jr.’s enthusiasm suggests this tweak could bring added intensity to the 2025 season. While a single point may not seem monumental on paper, in a sport where championships are sometimes decided by razor-thin margins, it could become a deciding factor.

With Earnhardt Jr. giving it his seal of approval, all eyes will be on how teams adjust their strategies to chase these valuable bonus points. Could we see an entirely new approach to race-day tactics? Only time will tell.
