Danica Patrick’s Emotional Super Bowl Memory: Chris Stapleton’s National Anthem Left Her in Tears

Few moments in sports transcend beyond the game itself, but Chris Stapleton’s national anthem performance at Super Bowl LVII in 2023 was one of them. It was a raw, powerful, and emotional rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner”, and it left Danica Patrick, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and countless others in tears.

Now, ahead of Super Bowl LIX, Patrick is revisiting that unforgettable night, reflecting on how Stapleton’s performance shook her to her core.

A Night That Gave Danica Patrick Chills

Patrick, a trailblazer in motorsports, has lived through her fair share of high-pressure moments—from becoming the first woman to win an IndyCar race to sitting on the Daytona 500 pole in 2013. But nothing, she says, quite compared to the emotional wave she felt during Chris Stapleton’s anthem at Super Bowl LVII.

Reposting a story from a friend who attended the event live, Patrick reflected on that performance:

“Got to witness this live… I won’t ever forget it. Chills. Tears. It was absolutely beautiful.”

Stapleton’s gravelly, soulful voice, paired with a simple yet poignant guitar performance, wasn’t just another rendition of the anthem—it was a moment that resonated across America.

Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni and center Jason Kelce were caught on camera visibly sobbing, their emotions mirroring those of millions watching at home. The stadium erupted when Stapleton’s final note echoed through the night, with fireworks lighting up the sky and fighter jets roaring overhead.

Patrick wasn’t alone in her feelings—it was a performance that unified the entire nation in a rare, shared emotional experience.

Chris Stapleton’s Super Bowl Moment: The Performance That “Retired” Him from National Anthems

Surprisingly, Stapleton almost never performed the anthem at all.

The 11-time Grammy winner had repeatedly turned down requests to sing the national anthem, jokingly saying:

“I’ll just do it when it’s time to do it at the Super Bowl.”

When that moment finally came, he admitted he was terrified.

On Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s “Dirty Mo Media” podcast, Stapleton reflected on the experience, revealing:

“I do say now that I’ve officially retired from it as well.”

“I’m not saying my version wasn’t good. I think it was good… But all the TV editing that they did while I was doing it was just spot on. Everything that they did to make that moment feel as big and nice as it could—they did it, and they executed it flawlessly.”

When the cameras cut to fireworks exploding outside the stadium and fighter jets soaring overhead, it became one of the most iconic Super Bowl anthem performances ever.

And while Stapleton humbly shrugged off the impact, he couldn’t ignore the outpouring of emotion.

“People were like, ‘Oh, you made people cry,’” he recalled. “I was like, ‘Oh, OK. Good, I’m gonna go watch the game.’”

For many—including Danica Patrick and Dale Earnhardt Jr.—it was a moment they’ll never forget.

A Super Bowl LIX Without Stapleton—But Something Even Bigger Awaits

While Stapleton won’t be performing the anthem at Super Bowl LIX, he has something just as meaningful in store. Though details remain under wraps, insiders hint that he may have a special project lined up—one deeply personal to him.

Meanwhile, Patrick, like the rest of us, will be tuning in—not just for the game, but to see if anyone can match the magic that Stapleton created in 2023.

Did Chris Stapleton’s National Anthem Give You Chills Like It Did Danica Patrick?

For some, it was just an anthem.

For others, it was a moment of pure, unfiltered emotion—one that left even the toughest competitors wiping away tears.

Did Stapleton’s performance give you chills, too? Or was it just another Super Bowl moment?
