Helmut Marko’s Verdict: Why Max Verstappen Couldn’t Have Defeated Lewis Hamilton in the Turbo-Hybrid Era

As Lewis Hamilton embarks on his next chapter with Ferrari, the seven-time Formula 1 World Champion has made sure to leave a lasting tribute to the Mercedes family that shaped his historic career.

To thank the 3,000 employees at Brackley and Brixworth, Hamilton has commissioned renowned F1 artist Paul Oz to create a special painting of his 2019 Monaco Grand Prix victory—one of the most emotional wins of his career.

“It was an incredible partnership, and I wanted to leave something behind to thank everyone who made those years so special,” Hamilton said.

Why the 2019 Monaco GP? A Tribute to Niki Lauda

Hamilton’s 2019 Monaco Grand Prix victory was more than just a win—it was a tribute to Niki Lauda, Mercedes’ legendary non-executive chairman, who had passed away just days before the race.

🏁 Hamilton wore a special red helmet in honor of Lauda’s iconic design.
🏁 He ran the entire race on degrading tires, holding off Max Verstappen to secure an emotional victory.
🏁 Mercedes dedicated the win to Lauda, a key figure in bringing Hamilton to the team in 2013.

“I still miss him every day,” Hamilton said after the race. “I owe so much to Niki. Without him, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

3,000 Prints for Every Mercedes Team Member

To immortalize that moment, Hamilton has arranged for 3,000 limited-edition prints of Paul Oz’s artwork to be distributed to every single Mercedes employee—from engineers to mechanics, designers, and factory workers.

🎨 The original artwork will be permanently displayed at Mercedes’ Brackley headquarters.
🎨 Every team member receives a print as a token of appreciation.
🎨 A rare tribute from a driver to a team—showcasing Hamilton’s deep connection to Mercedes.

This farewell gift comes as Hamilton transitions to Ferrari, where he has already been embraced as a new hero by the Tifosi.

The End of an Era: Hamilton’s 12 Years of Mercedes Glory

Hamilton’s departure from Mercedes marks the end of one of the most dominant partnerships in F1 history:

🏆 6 World Championships (2014-2020)
🚀 84 Grand Prix victories
💨 Countless records shattered

But his final years were not easy. After losing the controversial 2021 title, Hamilton failed to win a race in 2022 and 2023, before securing two final victories in 2024.

Now, Ferrari awaits—and Mercedes moves on with young Italian sensation Andrea Kimi Antonelli alongside George Russell.

A Legacy That Lives On

As Hamilton steps into Ferrari red, his mark on Mercedes remains unerasable. His 3,000-strong farewell gift is proof that his appreciation for the team runs deeper than just success.

“I may be moving on, but Mercedes will always be part of my heart,” Hamilton said.

And now, his legacy will forever hang on the walls of Brackley, reminding everyone of the glory days of Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes.
