Red Bull’s F1 downfall decoded: How flexi wings shattered their dominance and reshaped the grid

Max Verstappen has racked up 63 Grand Prix victories, four consecutive world championships, and cemented his place among F1’s all-time greats. But when asked to pick his favorite wins, the Red Bull superstar admitted it wasn’t an easy task.

“First of all, I don’t remember all of them,” Verstappen joked during a Q&A session for Team Redline, his sim-racing team.

However, the Dutch phenom did identify key races that stood out, not just for their significance, but for how dominant he felt behind the wheel.

1. The Race That Started It All – Spain 2016

Verstappen’s first-ever F1 victory in Spain 2016 remains one of the most emotional. The Dutchman was just 18 years old, had just been promoted to Red Bull, and became the youngest race winner in history after holding off Kimi Räikkönen in a nail-biting finish.

“My first race win was very emotional,” Verstappen admitted.

This iconic moment kickstarted a career that would eventually see him dominate the sport like few others.

2. The First World Championship – Abu Dhabi 2021

Arguably the most dramatic F1 season finale of all time, Verstappen snatched the title from Lewis Hamilton on the last lap in Abu Dhabi after a controversial safety car restart.

“Winning your first championship, these kinds of milestones are incredibly important,” he said.

It was the race that changed everything, launching F1’s Verstappen era and ending Mercedes’ dominance.

3. When It’s ‘Too Easy’ – Hungary & Austria

Beyond historic moments, Verstappen loves races where he’s simply untouchable—where the Red Bull car and his talent combine into pure dominance.

“Winning a race by 30 seconds… that can also be really enjoyable,” he said, recalling Hungary 2023 and Austria 2021.

In Hungary, he obliterated the field, beating Lando Norris by 33 seconds in one of the most dominant RB19 performances. In Austria, he was completely unchallenged, leaving Lewis Hamilton in the dust by over 35 seconds.

When Verstappen is in the zone, the rest of the grid might as well be racing in another category.

4. The Most Unexpected Comeback – Brazil 2024

One of Verstappen’s most iconic recent wins came at the 2024 São Paulo Grand Prix, where he started 17th on the grid in treacherous wet conditions—and still found a way to win.

At the time, he was on a 10-race winless streak and frustration was creeping in. But a masterclass in overtaking, along with a perfectly timed red flag pit stop, saw him storm through the field to claim victory.

“That was just incredibly important at that stage of the season,” Verstappen reflected.
“But that was very stressful in the wet and coming from the back.”

It may not have been fun at the moment, but the adrenaline rush after the checkered flag made it one of his most satisfying wins.

More Wins Incoming? Verstappen’s Chase for Greatness

With 63 career victories, Verstappen sits third on the all-time wins list, behind only Michael Schumacher (91) and Lewis Hamilton (105).

At just 27 years old, he has plenty of time to rewrite the record books—and plenty of races left to add to his list of favorites.

Could 2025 deliver an even more legendary Verstappen moment?
