Carlos Sainz Knew McLaren Would Rise—Now He’s Betting Big on Williams

Carlos Sainz isn’t just a driver—he’s a believer in long-term vision.

After watching McLaren shock the world by winning the 2024 Constructors’ Championship, Sainz reflected on his gut instinct that the Woking-based squad would eventually reach the top.

“I remember that when I left McLaren, I really thought there were smart people and that that team could become world champion in the future,” Sainz admitted.

Now, after being replaced at Ferrari by Lewis Hamilton, Sainz is trusting that same instinct again—this time with Williams Racing.

Sainz’s Move from McLaren to Ferrari: Was It the Right Call?

Sainz left McLaren at the end of 2020 to join Scuderia Ferrari, believing it was a better long-term bet at the time.

Back then, McLaren was stuck in midfield, while Ferrari was plotting its comeback after a miserable 2020 season. But as time has proven, McLaren had the right foundation all along.

When McLaren officially dethroned Red Bull to win the 2024 Constructors’ Championship, Sainz couldn’t help but smile at his earlier prediction coming true.

“Last year McLaren actually graduated world champion and I said to myself: ‘Ok, I have to trust my instincts.’”

Now, with Ferrari turning the page and Lewis Hamilton taking his seat, Sainz is once again betting on the future of a team with deep potential—Williams Racing.

Why Sainz Believes Williams Is the Right Move

After weighing offers from Audi and Alpine, Sainz ultimately chose Williams—a team that, on paper, isn’t close to contending for a title yet.

So why take the risk? Because of the same gut feeling he had about McLaren.

“I know Williams has a good project: they have support and good people,” Sainz explained.
“And in the end, this combination of two things pushed me to believe in Williams.”

Under James Vowles’ leadership, Williams has been aggressively rebuilding, and Sainz sees the same blueprint for success that McLaren had a few years ago.

Can Sainz Help Williams Rise Like McLaren?

There’s no doubt—Sainz is walking into a long-term project. Williams is still years away from fighting at the front, but with the right leadership, investment, and engineering, it could eventually follow McLaren’s trajectory.

“Carlos Sainz will play a key role in Williams’ rise in the F1 midfield this year,” one insider noted.

For Sainz, the goal isn’t just about scoring points in 2025—it’s about laying the groundwork for a future where Williams is once again a winning team.

And if his gut feeling is right again, Williams might just be Formula 1’s next Cinderella story.
