Vowles expresses astonishment at Mercedes/Red Bull neglecting Sainz F1 transfer

Doubt Lewis Hamilton at your own risk.

As the seven-time Formula 1 world champion gears up for his first season with Ferrari, skeptics have written off his chances, questioning whether the 40-year-old Briton is past his prime.

But Williams Team Principal James Vowles, a man who worked alongside Hamilton for over a decade at Mercedes, has a warning for the doubters—Hamilton is about to come back stronger than ever.

“The one thing about Lewis that I know is that he reinvents himself every winter,” Vowles said.
“He comes back stronger every winter, and with every competitor he’s been up against, he finds a way to improve himself, to become alongside them if he is behind them.”

Hamilton’s blockbuster switch to Ferrari ahead of the 2025 season was met with mixed reactions. Many fans and pundits questioned whether the move—one of the most shocking in F1 history—was a last attempt at reclaiming former glory.

But according to Vowles, Hamilton has made a career out of defying expectations, and 2025 will be no different.

Vowles: “You Can Never Write Him Off”

Hamilton has already been called “out of prime” by critics. But for those who assume he won’t compete for a championship, Vowles has a stark reminder:

“If he is ahead, he finds a way of trying to step and march forward. It is Lewis—he is a seven-time world champion, you can never write him off.”

That relentless evolution, according to Vowles, is what makes Hamilton one of the greatest drivers of all time. It’s not just about raw speed—it’s his ability to adapt, learn, and constantly push himself beyond his limits.

Vowles Credits Hamilton for His Own Success

Having worked closely with Hamilton as Mercedes’ chief strategist, Vowles knows firsthand the work ethic, mindset, and mentality that make Hamilton a force to be reckoned with.

“I am the man I am today thanks to Lewis,” Vowles admitted.
“He taught me about how you can reinvent yourself every single year. Continuous change, continuous improvement, continuous evolution. Don’t accept what you knew six months ago—accept where you want to be in six months’ time.”

That level of self-improvement, Vowles believes, is exactly what Hamilton will bring to Ferrari—a team hungry to end its championship drought.

The Ferrari Factor: Is 2025 Hamilton’s Shot at an Eighth Title?

Ferrari made huge strides in 2024, winning five races and coming just 14 points shy of McLaren in the Constructors’ Championship. With a fully redesigned SF-25 on the way, team boss Fred Vasseur believes Ferrari is primed for a title challenge.

“The car will be completely new; I think we’ll have less than one percent of the parts in common with the 2024 car,” Vasseur revealed.
“We can’t say now if 2025 will be our year, but I trust the project we’re working on.”

For Hamilton, Ferrari represents a new chapter and a fresh challenge. He’s no stranger to leading a team to greatness, having helped turn Mercedes into an F1 powerhouse.

Now, the mission is clear—bring Ferrari back to the top and claim a record-breaking eighth world title.

A Season of Redemption Awaits

As the 2025 season looms, the rivalry is set. Hamilton will go head-to-head with Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc, and George Russell in what promises to be one of the most competitive years in recent memory.

While many question whether Hamilton still has what it takes, Vowles and those who have seen him rebuild, evolve, and fight year after year know the truth:

This story isn’t over.

Lewis Hamilton isn’t coming to Ferrari to fade into the background—he’s coming to fight.

And if history has shown us anything, it’s that doubting Lewis Hamilton is a mistake.
