Max Verstappen and Red Bull: A Crucial 2025 Season Amid Uncertainty

Four-time Formula 1 champion Max Verstappen remains at the peak of his powers, yet his outlook for 2025 remains cautious. Despite his dominance with Red Bull, cracks within the team became more evident throughout 2024, raising concerns about their long-term future.

Red Bull’s Declining Dominance in 2024

While Verstappen’s 2024 title was remarkable, it masked several issues within Red Bull’s operations. The team struggled to maintain its performance edge throughout the season, ultimately being overhauled in the constructors’ championship. Verstappen himself had to fight harder than expected, spending more of the season without the fastest car than with it.

After the season finale in Abu Dhabi, Verstappen was realistic about Red Bull’s position heading into 2025:

🗣️ “It depends a lot on how you develop throughout the winter, because I hope to be in that fight. But we have a lot of work to do, for sure.”

Addressing Red Bull’s Internal Problems

While Red Bull mitigated their struggles enough to secure Verstappen’s title, lingering doubts remain:

  • Balance issues plagued the car’s development, leading to performance inconsistencies.
  • Cost and time restrictions forced Red Bull to take a short-term approach to fixing problems.
  • Loss of key personnel, including Adrian Newey (to Aston Martin) and sporting director Jonathan Wheatley (to Sauber), further destabilized the team.
  • McLaren and Ferrari’s rise, alongside rule clarifications affecting flexi wings and tire cooling techniques, significantly closed the gap.

Horner’s Leadership Under Scrutiny

Christian Horner has led Red Bull’s “us against the world” mentality, yet internal tensions and external pressure have grown. The departure of key staff and Jos Verstappen’s warnings about team implosion in early 2024 add to the growing instability.

Red Bull insists Newey’s exit had little impact on the RB19’s design, yet some speculate that his lack of influence may have contributed to their mid-season decline.

Max Verstappen’s Future in Question?

As Red Bull restructures, the biggest question is whether Verstappen will remain loyal or look elsewhere if performance issues persist:

  • Mercedes, Aston Martin, and Ferrari remain potential suitors for Verstappen’s services beyond 2025.
  • His father, Jos Verstappen, has never been shy about exploring exit strategies.
  • If Red Bull struggles early in 2025, could Max consider a shock switch?

Can Red Bull Reclaim Its Edge in 2025?

If Red Bull starts the new season behind McLaren and Ferrari, patience within Verstappen’s camp will wear thin. Despite Horner’s confidence in Verstappen’s long-term commitment:

🗣️ “He’s recently made that statement that he loves working within the team, and has every intention of doing so.”

The reality is far from certain, and Red Bull must urgently address its weaknesses to ensure it doesn’t lose its greatest asset—Max Verstappen.

Will 2025 be another dominant year for Red Bull, or will Verstappen’s championship ambitions push him toward a new challenge? The season ahead will decide their future.
