Kevin Harvick Calls for a Short-Track Mini-Series in NASCAR’s Schedule

Kevin Harvick Drops Bombshell: Scrap the Clash & All-Star Race for a $1M Short-Track Series

Kevin Harvick arrives at the 2023 NASCAR Awards Banquet at the Music City Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

2014 NASCAR Cup Series champion Kevin Harvick has proposed a mini-series within the season, featuring some of the sport’s most iconic short tracks.

Harvick’s Stance on Exhibition Races

The 2025 NASCAR Cup season started with a bang at The Clash at Bowman Gray Stadium. The race featured intense battles, thrilling moments, and an electric fan base, making it an unforgettable event. However, Harvick believes NASCAR should eliminate The Clash and the All-Star Race, replacing them with points-paying events.

Speaking on his Happy Hour podcast, Harvick emphasized that exhibition races don’t add value and that making them part of the official schedule would be a better alternative.

🗣️ “I think we should get rid of it. The All-Star race and The Clash… what we did last night was spectacular. Maybe it stays an exhibition race, but imagine if that was a points race. It would be hard to take it away from Bowman Gray at this point because of the reaction from the fans and how good the racing was.”

A Short-Track Mini-Series Proposal

Harvick proposed creating a short-track series within the Cup schedule, incorporating legendary tracks like Bowman Gray and Hickory. His vision? A grassroots summer series that revives NASCAR’s connection to its short-track heritage.

🗣️ “But I almost think that you could try to make all these events some style of points race—create a short-track series within the schedule. You could have Bowman Gray, Hickory, and another short track across the country. Maybe it’s a summer series.”

A $1 Million Prize for Short-Track Champions

Harvick also suggested that instead of a bracket-style challenge, NASCAR should make the grassroots series real and add a $1 million prize pool.

🗣️ “Instead of the bracket idea, let’s make it real. If you win the short-track summer series or grassroots series, whatever you want to call it, then you win a million bucks. Put a real-life bonus in instead of some artificial bracket.”

Will NASCAR Implement Harvick’s Plan?

While Harvick’s ideas have merit, implementing these major schedule changes would be challenging. Exhibition races have long-standing benefits, including sponsorship opportunities and fan engagement. However, with the overwhelming success of Bowman Gray’s Clash, the possibility of hosting a points-paying Cup race at the historic track remains an intriguing prospect.

Will NASCAR consider Harvick’s grassroots vision, or will tradition prevail? The 2025 season may provide some answers.
