Mads Østberg Reflects on His Greatest WRC Performance: Was It Really His Only Win?

For most World Rally Championship drivers, their best rally is often one they won. But does that hold true for Mads Østberg?

The Norwegian’s sole WRC victory was somewhat unconventional—handed to him after Mikko Hirvonen’s disqualification. However, there’s a strong argument that his finest performance came in a different event: a fierce battle with Hirvonen that he lost by a mere 6.5 seconds.

The 2011 Regulation Shift and Østberg’s Breakthrough

In 2011, the WRC underwent a significant transformation. The championship moved from two-liter, C-segment cars (like the Ford Focus) to 1.6-liter, B-segment cars (such as the Ford Fiesta). This shift saw a heated battle between the factory Citroëns and Fords, but one of Ford’s second-string Stobart drivers stole the spotlight at the season opener in Sweden.

Mads Østberg made a serious impression in Rally Sweden 2011, a performance that many argue was his true breakthrough in the WRC.

Looking Back with Luke Barry on SPIN, The Rally Pod

Østberg joins Luke Barry on this week’s episode of SPIN, The Rally Pod to revisit his career-defining drive in Sweden. He reflects on why it surprised him, whether he would have approached it differently in hindsight, and if it truly was his finest WRC outing.

Beyond reminiscing, Østberg also provides an update on his 2025 rally plans, offering insights into where we can expect to see him compete next season.

What’s Next for SPIN, The Rally Pod?

SPIN, The Rally Pod is undergoing exciting changes in March, which could mean more in-depth episodes like this one. Let us know what you think of this format and what other rally topics you’d like to hear discussed!
