The DS continues to be one of the most iconic cars of the 20th century. Launched in 1955, it quickly became a phenomenon. Designed by Flaminio Bertoni, a talented stylist, sculptor, and painter, assisted by a team of designers, the DS showcased both revolutionary and elegant features, with its avant-garde lines and innovations.
Its technology also captivated, thanks to the talent of two men. The first, André Lefèbvre, an aeronautical engineer by training, was a fervent advocate of front-wheel drive, as well as aerodynamics, lightness, and weight centralization. The second, Paul Magès, a self-taught engineer, was the creator of the hydraulic concept. He invented the famous hydropneumatic suspension, as well as hydraulic assistance for steering, clutch, and braking of the DS. Revolutionary, the DS quickly established itself as a benchmark in the automotive world and transported several presidents of the French Republic.
Over twenty years, between 1955 and 1975, nearly 1.5 million units of this car were produced in the heart of Paris. Almost forty years later – on June 1, 2014 – the two letters of this legendary car were reborn with the creation of the DS Automobiles brand.
The legacy of the DS model is now anchored in the timeless DNA of the brand, which draws inspiration from it to design models that embody the French art of traveling. And so the story continues.
To commemorate the 70 years of an automotive icon, the DS, DS Automobiles and the Paris Mint established a unique partnership to create a €10.00 silver coin, which features a 1955 DS mirrored with a 1975 DS 23.
The coin is produced with a golden hue, ingeniously showcasing the beam of light from the headlights and uniquely illuminating the face of the coin. This collectible coin is presented in a case that visually recalls the history of the DS.
The newly launched coin, limited to 5,000 units and sold for €15.00, is the starting point of a collection that will grow throughout the year.
