The billion-dollar question: Could Aston Martin lure Max Verstappen away from Red Bull?

The Formula 1 paddock is buzzing with speculation about Max Verstappen’s future, and for good reason. Despite being contracted to Red Bull until 2028, recent reports suggest that Aston Martin could be preparing an audacious move to lure the four-time world champion away.

With Adrian Newey’s departure, Red Bull’s mid-season struggles, and the looming uncertainty around Helmut Marko’s future, is it really possible that Verstappen could leave Red Bull for Aston Martin?

The Verstappen-Red Bull Situation: Cracks Beginning to Show?

Since joining Red Bull in 2016, Verstappen has built a dominant legacy, securing four straight championships. However, not everything is perfect behind the scenes.

  • Adrian Newey’s departure to Aston Martin in 2024 has raised major concerns about Red Bull’s technical future.
  • The team endured a brutal 10-race winless streak, exposing weaknesses in car development and strategy.
  • Helmut Marko, a key Verstappen ally, could be next to leave, and rumors suggest that Verstappen’s contract contains an exit clause if Marko departs.

If Marko exits Red Bull, Verstappen could legally walk away from his contract—and Aston Martin is reportedly waiting to pounce.

The £1 Billion Rumor: Aston Martin’s Grand Ambition

Billionaire Lawrence Stroll, the man behind Aston Martin’s F1 revival, has made no secret of his ambition to turn the team into a championship powerhouse.

  • Since rebranding Racing Point to Aston Martin in 2021, he has aggressively pursued top talent, bringing in Sebastian Vettel and Fernando Alonso.
  • The team has built a state-of-the-art factory and secured several high-profile technical recruits.
  • Reports surfaced that Aston Martin’s commercial director, Jefferson Slack, was using Verstappen’s name to lure sponsors for a potential £1 billion mega deal—though the team has denied this claim.

Why Would Verstappen Consider Aston Martin?

Despite Red Bull’s dominance, Verstappen may not be fully committed to the team long-term. Several factors could push him toward Aston Martin:

  1. Newey’s Departure:
    • Verstappen thrived under Newey’s legendary car designs. Without him, Red Bull’s future is uncertain.
  2. Helmut Marko’s Future:
    • If Marko leaves, Verstappen may exercise a contract clause that allows him to follow suit.
  3. The Need for a New Challenge:
    • Verstappen has repeatedly hinted that he doesn’t see himself staying in F1 forever.
    • Could a new challenge at Aston Martin be the next step to cementing his legacy?
  4. Lawrence Stroll’s Influence & Massive Investments:
    • Stroll is known for big, bold moves and isn’t afraid to spend whatever it takes to get his way.
    • Fernando Alonso’s contract expires soon, meaning a Verstappen-Alonso partnership or even a direct swap is possible.

Could Mercedes Still Be in the Mix?

While Aston Martin seems like the most aggressive pursuer, Mercedes remains a wildcard in the Verstappen sweepstakes.

  • With Lewis Hamilton leaving for Ferrari in 2025, Mercedes will have a vacant seat alongside George Russell.
  • Toto Wolff has long admired Verstappen, and Mercedes’ resources could be tempting.
  • However, with Mercedes still struggling in the ground-effect era, it’s unclear whether Verstappen sees them as a realistic title-winning project.

Reality Check: How Likely Is a Move?

At this stage, there’s no concrete evidence that Verstappen is preparing to leave Red Bull. However, the dominoes are lining up in a way that makes a potential switch more feasible than ever.

  • If Red Bull’s management instability continues, Verstappen could be tempted to walk away.
  • Aston Martin’s backing and technical ambitions make them a serious alternative.
  • Helmut Marko’s departure could trigger a contract escape clause for Verstappen.

For now, Verstappen remains a Red Bull driver, but the 2025 season could determine whether his future lies elsewhere.
