Mikkel Jensen’s Shocking Comeback: First Single-Seater Outing in Nine Years Set for Formula E Rookie Test

TDG Racing’s driver Mikkel Jensen gets ready for a practice session during the Roar Before the Rolex 24, Friday, Jan.19, 2024 at Daytona International Speedway.

In a stunning return to single-seater racing, World Endurance Championship star Mikkel Jensen is set to take the wheel of a Formula E car for the very first time in next week’s Jeddah E-Prix rookie test.

After nearly a decade away from open-wheel competition, the Peugeot TotalEnergies driver is stepping into the all-electric world of Formula E, as Cupra Kiro’s chosen rookie for the crucial FP0 session ahead of the weekend’s race.

From Endurance Battles to Electric Racing: Jensen’s Unlikely Formula E Shot

Jensen, known for his dominance in endurance racing, has spent the past two years competing in the WEC while simultaneously battling in IMSA and the European Le Mans Series. His career highlights include:

🏆 LMP3 champion in 2019 (European Le Mans Series)
🏆 LMP2 champion in 2021 (IMSA)
🏎 A factory drive with Peugeot in WEC since 2022

But the 29-year-old hasn’t raced a single-seater since his days in European Formula 3 back in 2016. That’s nearly a decade away from open-wheel action, making his Formula E debut in Jeddah a high-stakes return to unfamiliar territory.

And yet, Jensen is relishing the challenge.

“FP0 in Jeddah will mark the first time I’ve driven a single-seater since racing in European Formula 3 in 2016, and I’m looking forward to the experience of driving a Formula E car for the first time.”

“Formula E has interested me for a while now, and from my time preparing in the simulator, the car feels completely different to anything I’ve experienced before in my career. I would like to thank CUPRA KIRO for giving me this opportunity – I can’t wait to get started.”

Why Jensen? Cupra Kiro’s Big Bet on an Endurance Star

Jensen’s selection might raise eyebrows among Formula E purists, but Cupra Kiro’s Team Principal Alex Hui is fully backing the Danish driver.

“Mikkel is one of the best sportscar drivers of our generation and has consistently proven himself across WEC, IMSA, and ELMS in recent seasons.”

“Alongside his strong natural instincts, Mikkel has good technical awareness and understanding, and holds extensive experience working with manufacturers at a World Championship level.”

With Formula E’s Gen3 cars requiring a razor-sharp balance of energy management, strategic awareness, and adaptability, Jensen’s background in high-pressure endurance racing could give him an edge in the all-electric series.

From Daytona to Jeddah: Jensen’s Intense Transition

Jensen arrives in Saudi Arabia off the back of a grueling Daytona 24 Hours, where he secured an eighth-place finish in LMP2 with TDS Racing. Going from the brutal, fuel-conscious strategy of endurance racing to the fast-paced, energy-saving discipline of Formula E will be a major shift in driving style.

Unlike the long stints and meticulous race craft of WEC, Formula E demands ultra-aggressive energy regeneration, precise braking techniques, and mastering street circuits with zero margin for error. The question remains: Can Jensen adapt quickly enough to make an impact in FP0?

What to Expect from Jensen in the Jeddah Test

The FP0 rookie session at the inaugural Jeddah E-Prix isn’t just a warm-up—it’s an essential part of Formula E’s evolving development process.

  • Jensen will get limited track time but must prove his ability to manage energy, understand car behavior, and provide valuable technical feedback.
  • Cupra Kiro is looking for fresh insights to refine its technical package for the season, and Jensen’s perspective as an endurance ace could offer a unique edge.
  • This one-off opportunity could be Jensen’s gateway to a future in Formula E—especially if he impresses with his adaptation to the all-electric formula.

Will Jensen’s Formula E Experiment Lead to More?

With Formula E constantly attracting top talent from endurance racing, Formula 1, and touring cars, a strong performance in Jeddah could open doors for Jensen to make a permanent switch.

For now, he remains a crucial figure in Peugeot’s hypercar project, but if Cupra Kiro sees potential, could we see Jensen competing full-time in Formula E in the near future?

One thing is certain: his single-seater return is one of the most intriguing stories of the 2025 Formula E season—and all eyes will be on him when he finally gets back into a formula car after nearly a decade away.
