Jos Verstappen, the father of four-time Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen, is set to embark on his most ambitious rally campaign yet, committing to a full season in the European Rally Championship (ERC) alongside his Belgian Rally Championship (BRC) commitments.
Since transitioning from Formula 1 to rallying in 2022, Verstappen Sr. has found impressive success, racking up 10 overall victories in just 38 starts. Now, at 52 years old, he’s taking on a grueling 19-20 event schedule in 2025, including his first full ERC campaign.
Verstappen’s Insane 2025 Rally Schedule
Speaking about his packed season ahead, Verstappen revealed just how intense his 2025 calendar will be.
“This year, I’ve got 19 or 20 events planned: every BRC rally, every ERC rally, the Rallye International du Valais, and a historic rally in Sweden,” Verstappen said.
But perhaps the most exciting addition?
“And we’re also doing the East African Safari Classic Rally with the Porsche. We have an insanely beautiful program.”
For someone who only entered the world of rallying three years ago, Verstappen’s rapid progression has been remarkable. However, competing against ERC regulars will be his toughest challenge yet.
Co-Driver Jamoul: “Podiums Are Possible, But Experience Will Be a Factor”
Verstappen’s co-driver, Renaud Jamoul, acknowledged the steep learning curve but believes that with time, Verstappen could become a genuine podium contender.
“I think he can perform very well even at the highest level, but he will miss the experience,” Jamoul admitted.
The ERC is a different beast compared to national rallying, with a mix of tarmac and gravel events across diverse locations.
“If we go, for example, for the European Championship, for sure the first year, it will be difficult. When you go to Roma for the first time, those guys have so much more experience.”
That said, Jamoul hasn’t ruled out Verstappen becoming a serious competitor if he commits to multiple seasons in the ERC.
“At some point, I think if we do two years in a row on the European Championship, maybe we can fight for the podium. But it will for sure be difficult. But as I said, he already surprised me a few times, so why not?”
ERC Debut: Spain’s Rally Sierra Morena Awaits
Verstappen will make his ERC debut on April 4-6 at Spain’s Rally Sierra Morena – Córdoba.
With zero prior experience on any ERC events, Verstappen will be up against drivers with years of rallying knowledge on each course.
The question is: Will his natural racing instincts and rapid progress be enough to challenge the ERC veterans?
One thing is certain—Jos Verstappen is not just here for fun. He’s aiming to prove himself in one of Europe’s most competitive rally championships.
