The tariffs on automobile imports announced by U.S. President Donald Trump may affect VW, Audi, and Porsche.
Unlike the VW brand, Porsche and Audi do not have factories in the U.S., which could lead to increased customs duties. In this regard, the German newspaper “Handelsblatt,” specializing in economic matters, reported this Wednesday that the VW Group is considering the possibility of establishing Audi and Porsche factories in the U.S.
According to the same publication, the most likely scenario involves expanding the VW factory in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in addition to utilizing the factory planned for the production of Scout models in South Carolina.
This solution aims to avoid the consequences of the tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump, who since taking office has announced plans to impose tariffs of 25% on automobile imports from Mexico and Canada starting February 1, 2025, in order to encourage the relocation of production to the U.S. and strengthen the American automotive industry.
In addition to Mexico and Canada, all indications suggest that the U.S. administration will impose a 10% additional fee on cars exported from Europe to the U.S., which will affect Audi and Porsche.
