Stellantis has announced the total acquisition of the shares of the joint venture it maintained since 2018 with the Belgian multinational Punch Powertrain, a company specialized in the production of transmission and propulsion systems for the automotive industry.
The decision now announced allows Stellantis to control the production activities of the eDCT transmission at the facilities in Metz, France, and at the Mirafiori complex in Turin, Italy.
The eDCT technology integrates a 21 kW electric motor into a dual-clutch transmission. The motor provides electric propulsion when less torque is needed, such as when driving in the city or at constant speeds, allowing the internal combustion engine to remain off for 50% of the time in urban cycles.
Consequently, the eDCT transmission – which is structurally characterized by a significant weight reduction and optimization of production costs – also stands out for its positive effects on fuel savings and the reduction of harmful emissions.
Stellantis’s decision to directly manage the development and production process of the eDCT transmission is part of the strategic plan for the expansion and renewal of the MHEV and PHEV range.
