Can Nico Mueller Match Jake Dennis at Andretti? A Pragmatic Approach to Formula E Success

When Nico Mueller joined Andretti for the 2024-25 Formula E season, the expectations were clear: support reigning champion Jake Dennis while carving out his own identity in one of the most competitive teams on the grid. Despite a challenging start to the season, Mueller’s methodical approach and willingness to learn could eventually make him a formidable partner—and rival—to Dennis.

A Tough Start, But Progress Is Evident

Mueller’s adaptation to Andretti’s setup hasn’t been without hurdles. After a strong start in Mexico, where an aggressive Attack Mode strategy earned him points with a ninth-place finish, his Sao Paulo outing was marred by a power cut and contact with Mitch Evans. With two rounds completed, Dennis holds 13 points (6th in the standings), while Mueller has managed only 2 (15th).

Yet Mueller’s initial performances reflect his ability to adapt quickly, even as he faces the steep challenge of matching a driver who has defined Andretti’s success. Dennis’s dominance is hard to overlook:

  • Andretti Points Scored (2020–2024): Dennis 568 of the team’s 728 points.
  • E-Prix Wins: Dennis has taken six of Andretti’s seven victories since joining in 2020.

It’s clear that Dennis is the benchmark not only for Andretti but for the Formula E paddock. For Mueller, this means finding ways to grow within the team while contributing to its success.

“A Team Geared Around Dennis”—But Mueller Sees Opportunity

Mueller acknowledges that Dennis’s longstanding relationship with Andretti has naturally shaped the team’s operations around the British driver. However, Mueller sees this as an opportunity rather than a challenge.

  • Mueller’s Take: “I think it automatically becomes geared up around Jake… but I don’t see it as a negative at all. He’s obviously one of the very best in this paddock, and he has done extremely well together with Andretti.”

Mueller also recognizes that Dennis’s refined communication with his crew and mastery of small details offer valuable lessons. By absorbing these insights, Mueller aims to elevate his own performance, both in terms of pace and teamwork.

From Struggles to Stability: Mueller’s Career Journey

Mueller’s path to Andretti has been anything but linear. His previous stints in Formula E were marked by erratic team environments and technical challenges:

  • Dragon/Penske (2019–21): Struggled with inconsistent equipment.
  • Abt (2023-24): Faced technical limitations despite flashes of potential.

Now, at Andretti, Mueller is in a more stable environment where he can focus on maximizing his capabilities.

  • Mueller on Andretti: “There’s lots of consistency in the team… Jake is one of those very long-lasting constants.”

A Balanced Approach: Learning and Competing

Mueller’s pragmatic mindset could be the key to his success alongside Dennis. He’s keenly aware of the need to learn before he pushes for dominance within the team.

  • Mueller’s Focus: “Coming into a team like Andretti with [Dennis] next to you, there’s a lot I can learn from him… It allows me to take a step forward as well and keep growing as a Formula E driver.”

Unlike previous teammates who struggled to challenge Dennis, Mueller’s blend of humility, experience, and adaptability makes him a promising addition.

The Road Ahead: Can Mueller Deliver?

While it’s still early days, Mueller’s progress will ultimately be judged by results. Breaking into qualifying duels and consistently finishing in the points will be crucial benchmarks.

Key Questions for the Season:

  • Can Mueller close the gap to Dennis in qualifying and race pace?
  • Will his ability to adapt and learn translate into podium finishes?
  • How will he handle pressure as the season progresses?

With Dennis as the established leader and Mueller showing signs of growth, Andretti’s 2024-25 campaign could set the stage for an exciting dynamic between the two drivers. The stopwatch will decide, but Mueller’s calculated approach suggests he’s ready to make his mark.
