Porsche has been showing its intention to move forward with the production of a new 718 Cayman for three years now, even revealing the Mission R concept, which pointed to be the first glimpse of what could be, or at least, what to expect from the design of the successor to the well-known sports model 718 Cayman.
After expressing intentions, Porsche now seems to be progressing in its work to present an electric 718, as the first prototypes have finally started road testing, and the first images revealed by “MotorAuthority” show that the Cayman Electric maintains a silhouette very similar to that of the current 982 model, which has been on sale since 2016. Notable is the rear window that flows from the roof to the tip of an active spoiler that is retracted in the images but extends away from the body at high speeds. There is also a third brake light, installed vertically at the top of the rear window.
Based on the PPE platform, developed in collaboration with Audi, it is already known that the new electric Porsche Boxster and Cayman will feature versions with one and two electric motors.
Remember that the Mission R concept, seen as the future of the 718 Cayman, was equipped with two electric motors positioned directly over their respective axles, thus providing all-wheel drive. The front motor delivers 435 hp, while the rear can produce up to 653 hp. The concept also featured a single-speed transmission.
In this way, fans of the current gasoline-powered 718 Boxster and Cayman will need to hurry if they want to have one of these models from the German brand in their garage, as Porsche announced in 2024 that both models will cease production in 2025, and the arrival of the new 718 Cayman, which may be unveiled later this year, is not expected until 2026.
