Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari Era Gains Momentum with Barcelona Test Debut today

Lewis Hamilton’s highly anticipated Ferrari chapter continues to unfold as the seven-time Formula 1 champion gears up for his second on-track outing with the Scuderia. Following his initial test at Fiorano last week, Hamilton will take the wheel of the SF-23 at Barcelona’s Circuit de Catalunya today, January 28, as part of a three-day TPC (Testing of Previous Cars) program.

Why Barcelona Matters for Hamilton’s Acclimatization

Unlike Fiorano—a track unfamiliar to Hamilton—Barcelona is a circuit he knows intimately, having raced there in F1 for over a decade. This familiarity will allow Hamilton to focus entirely on adapting to Ferrari’s systems, power unit, and handling characteristics without the added challenge of learning a new track.

The testing program at Barcelona is seen as a crucial step in Hamilton’s transition to Ferrari, particularly in understanding the Ferrari power unit, which will power him for the first time in his F1 career. Until now, Hamilton has only driven Mercedes-powered cars, making this test essential for acclimatization ahead of the 2025 season.

A Glimpse into the Future: Prototype Testing with the SF-24

Following the Barcelona test, Hamilton will join teammate Charles Leclerc on February 4-5 to test 2026 prototype Pirelli tires. This session will use a modified SF-24, adapted to mimic the characteristics of the 2026 F1 regulations. These changes will help both drivers and Ferrari gather critical data as they prepare for the sport’s next major regulatory overhaul.

Hamilton’s Integration into the Ferrari Family

Ferrari has gone all out to welcome Hamilton into the team, with the Brit undergoing what the Scuderia described as a “total immersion program” during his first visit to Maranello. This included meetings with team management, engineers, and staff, aimed at ensuring a seamless integration into the iconic Italian outfit.

Hamilton’s first laps in a Ferrari took place at Fiorano, where he completed 89 kilometers in the SF-23. While that test focused on familiarizing Hamilton with Ferrari’s setup, the Barcelona outing will shift attention to performance analysis and feedback on both car and power unit.

The Bigger Picture: Ferrari’s 2025 Preparations

Hamilton’s debut season with Ferrari comes with massive expectations. Both Hamilton and Leclerc are targeting Ferrari’s first Drivers’ Championship since 2007 and a possible repeat of their Constructors’ Championship success in 2024. The Scuderia recently unveiled their striking 2025 race suits and helmet designs, fueling excitement among fans for what is being called the “1644 era.”

Key Dates in Ferrari’s Pre-Season Program

  • January 28-30: Barcelona TPC Test (SF-23)
  • February 4-5: Pirelli 2026 Prototype Tire Test (Modified SF-24)
  • February 18: 2025 Livery Launch at F1 75 Event, London
  • February 19: New 2025 Ferrari Car Unveiling, Maranello
  • February 26-28: Official Pre-Season Testing, Bahrain

With Hamilton and Leclerc spearheading Ferrari’s campaign, fans eagerly await the results of these extensive preparations. Whether Hamilton’s experience and Ferrari’s cutting-edge development can deliver a historic season remains one of F1’s most exciting storylines heading into 2025.
