Oliver Solberg Penalized for Drifting Antics at Monte Carlo Rally

Rally star Oliver Solberg found himself in hot water once again after being handed a five-minute time penalty at the Monte Carlo Rally for what officials deemed “exhibition driving.” The infraction occurred at the iconic Fairmont hairpin, where Solberg was spotted drifting on a road section following the final podium ceremony.

Strong comeback marred by penalty

The 23-year-old, making his World Rally Championship (WRC) debut in a Toyota GR Yaris Rally2, had finished sixth in the RC2 class and 13th overall, an impressive recovery after hitting a bank on cold tires during Thursday evening’s stage. However, the post-rally penalty overshadowed his performance.

While the penalty didn’t significantly impact Solberg’s standing—Monte Carlo wasn’t one of his registered WRC2 events—the incident brought back memories of his previous penalty for “exhibition driving.”

A déjà vu moment for Solberg

This isn’t the first time Solberg’s flair behind the wheel has caused controversy. At the 2022 Rally Portugal, donuts he performed after the flying finish of the Lousada superspecial cost him a crucial victory against rival Gus Greensmith.

The Monte Carlo incident, while less consequential to Solberg’s standings this time, raised eyebrows among rally fans and officials alike. The penalty serves as a reminder that even post-event antics can have repercussions in the tightly regulated world of WRC.

Mixed reactions from the rally community

Fans and critics are divided over the penalty. Some see Solberg’s drifting as a harmless display of his personality and driving skill, while others believe such actions undermine the professionalism expected in top-tier rallying.

For Solberg, the penalty serves as another lesson in navigating the balance between entertaining fans and adhering to WRC regulations. His growing talent and bold driving style continue to draw attention, but moments like these underscore the need for discipline in a sport where every second—and rule—counts.
