Max Verstappen, one of Formula 1’s most dominant drivers of his generation, credits his relentless pursuit of success to the firm yet essential guidance of his father, Jos Verstappen. Reflecting on his journey from a laid-back karting prodigy to a four-time world champion, Verstappen reveals how his father’s tough love instilled the focus and determination that define him today.

Jos Verstappen’s no-nonsense approach

As a young karter, Max’s natural talent was undeniable, but his easygoing attitude didn’t sit well with his father, a former F1 driver himself. Jos often challenged Max’s laid-back approach to pressure, emphasizing the need for a winning mindset.

“That’s always a discussion I had with my dad when I was a kid,” Verstappen shared. “I always had this thing that I said, ‘Yeah, whatever, we’ll see.’ My dad said, ‘What do you mean, we’ll see? That’s not an approach.’”

Those early lessons paid off, as Verstappen has become synonymous with focus and precision. He acknowledges his father’s tough mentoring as a pivotal factor in shaping the racer he is today. “I also needed to be pushed when I was a kid, and I’m glad my dad did that because it made me the driver I am today,” he said.

From karting prodigy to F1 history-maker

Verstappen’s meteoric rise in motorsport saw him debut in Formula 1 at just 17 years old, breaking records and turning heads with his raw talent. Now 27, the reigning world champion solidified his place in F1 history with a fourth consecutive title in 2024. Despite his unparalleled success, Verstappen remains grounded in the lessons instilled during his formative years.

A calm exterior, a fierce competitor

Even as the stakes grow higher, Verstappen retains a calm and composed demeanor before races. He credits this mindset for keeping him grounded and performing at his best. “I know that when I jump in a go-kart or whatever car, once I put my helmet on, I’m on it – that keeps me sane,” Verstappen explained. “I’m just being very relaxed and calm about it.”

The father-son dream realized

Jos Verstappen’s influence extends beyond technical guidance; it helped forge the mental toughness required to excel in the high-pressure world of F1. For Max, achieving success alongside his father is a dream realized. But the four-time champion shows no signs of complacency, remaining as hungry as ever to extend his dominance in the sport.
