24 Hours of Daytona 2025: Ex-F1 Stars, Super Teams, and the Ultimate Endurance Showdown

Teams prepare to go on track for the second practice session during Roar Before the 24 practice in preparation for the Rolex 24 at Daytona at Daytona International Speedway Friday, Jan. 17, 2025.

The 2025 24 Hours of Daytona promises to be one of the most electrifying endurance races in motorsport history, with a jaw-dropping roster of talent that includes 14 ex-Formula 1 drivers. This year’s event is not just an opening act for the IMSA SportsCar Championship but a star-studded spectacle that blends speed, strategy, and an unprecedented level of competition.

A star-studded F1 alumni gathering

It’s not every day that you see a lineup of former F1 drivers battling wheel-to-wheel outside of an exhibition race, but Daytona 2025 brings that dream to life. Kevin Magnussen, Felipe Nasr, Romain Grosjean, Daniil Kvyat, and Kamui Kobayashi headline the roster, each aiming to leave their mark in endurance racing’s biggest spotlight.

Magnussen, racing in the BMW M Hybrid V8 alongside Philipp Eng, Raffaele Marciello, and Dries Vanthoor, enters the event with momentum. Fresh off a pole position set by Vanthoor, the Danish star aims to improve on his near-victory in 2021, when a late puncture dashed his hopes. With a car that clinched its first win at Indianapolis last year, Magnussen is poised for redemption.

Felipe Nasr, last year’s IMSA champion and Daytona victor, returns with Porsche Penske Motorsport in a formidable lineup featuring Nick Tandy and Laurens Vanthoor. Nasr’s ability to adapt and dominate in endurance racing cements him as one to watch.

Meanwhile, Grosjean and Kvyat team up in Lamborghini’s SC63, a car undergoing significant development after a challenging 2024. Their performance will test whether Lamborghini’s internal efforts can deliver a competitive package.

The GTP class: Where legends collide

The GTP category, IMSA’s top class, features five manufacturers fielding state-of-the-art hybrid prototypes under the LMDh ruleset. Cadillac, Acura, Porsche, BMW, and Lamborghini are all vying for supremacy. Each car combines a manufacturer-designed engine and bodywork with a spec hybrid system, leveling the playing field and placing emphasis on driver skill and team execution.

Cadillac leads the charge with a robust presence, including Jack Aitken, Felipe Drugovich, and Frederik Vesti in the Whelen Cadillac. Acura, with Meyer Shank Racing at the helm, brings a refreshed program after overcoming past controversies, while Porsche boasts the firepower of Nasr, Pascal Wehrlein, and Gianmaria Bruni.

Rising stars and IndyCar crossovers

Daytona 2025 isn’t just about F1 alumni; it’s also a proving ground for rising stars and crossover talents. IndyCar champion Alex Palou joins Acura, while Pascal Wehrlein, the 2024 Formula E champion, takes on the challenge in a privateer Porsche entry. Christian Rasmussen, Colton Herta, and Callum Ilott lead the LMP2 class, showcasing the event’s unparalleled diversity of talent.

Why Daytona stands out

Daytona’s unique charm lies in its unpredictability and accessibility. Unlike the punishing demands of Le Mans, IMSA’s frequent caution flags allow teams to recover from setbacks, ensuring dramatic comebacks and thrilling finishes. The timing of the event, kicking off the racing season, gives it a “first day back at school” atmosphere that attracts drivers from all corners of the motorsport world.

Additionally, Daytona’s LMDh ruleset bridges the gap between IMSA and the World Endurance Championship, enabling manufacturers to compete on both sides of the Atlantic. This synergy has fueled IMSA’s rise, attracting global attention and elevating the competition to unprecedented levels.

What to watch for in 2025

  • Magnussen’s Redemption Arc: Can he finally clinch a Daytona victory with BMW after coming so close in 2021?
  • Nasr’s Dominance: Will he continue his reign as one of endurance racing’s best alongside a stacked Porsche lineup?
  • Lamborghini’s Progress: Can Grosjean and Kvyat steer the SC63 into contention after last year’s growing pains?
  • IndyCar Meets IMSA: Palou, Herta, and Rasmussen bring star power from IndyCar, while drivers like Scott McLaughlin and Shane van Gisbergen add intriguing crossover stories.

The Daytona legacy grows

With its all-star cast, cutting-edge machinery, and a history of thrilling finishes, the 24 Hours of Daytona remains a crown jewel of endurance racing. The 2025 edition raises the stakes even higher, promising fierce battles, dramatic moments, and perhaps the birth of a new legend. Whether it’s F1 veterans, rising talents, or endurance specialists, Daytona is where motorsport’s finest converge—and where anything can happen.
