Fernando Alonso vs. Lance Stroll: Aston Martin Boss Claims ‘Small Margins’ Separate Drivers Despite Stark Stats

After a frustrating 2024 campaign, Aston Martin enters 2025 with Fernando Alonso’s relentless drive and Lance Stroll’s redemption arc under the microscope. The team hopes to reverse its downward spiral after finishing a disappointing fifth in the Constructors’ standings, a sharp drop from the promise of 2023.

Alonso: The Veteran Torchbearer

Fernando Alonso, ever the warrior, carried Aston Martin through a turbulent season with unwavering consistency. Despite battling an underperforming AMR24, the two-time world champion managed to extract every ounce of potential from the car. Heading into 2025, Alonso sees the lessons of 2024 as a foundation for a rebound:

“All those difficulties probably teach us a lot of lessons, which we will apply into next year’s car,” Alonso shared. With a career defined by resilience, expect Alonso to keep the Aston Martin flame alive, regardless of the odds.

Stroll: A Make-or-Break Year

On the other hand, Lance Stroll faces a critical 2025 season. Overshadowed by Alonso in nearly every metric, including being out-qualified 19 times and out-raced 17 times, Stroll’s 24-point contribution to the team’s tally pales in comparison to Alonso’s. The low point came with his shocking trip to the gravel trap at Interlagos—a mistake that encapsulated his underwhelming year.

Yet, Aston Martin Chief Trackside Officer Mike Krack defended Stroll, suggesting the car’s complexity was a significant factor:

“There is not that much difference between the two. The AMR24 is so complicated to drive that you can never predict anything.”

Stroll must now rise to the challenge and prove he belongs on a team with championship aspirations.

The Road Ahead

Aston Martin’s development woes from 2024 remain fresh in memory, but the team is optimistic that its struggles will fuel a resurgence. With both Alonso and Stroll under contract until 2026, stability in the driver lineup is a given. However, the question remains whether the AMR25 can deliver the performance needed to elevate the team back into the top-tier fight.

Will Aston Martin Bounce Back?

The 2025 season is make-or-break for Aston Martin. Alonso, with nothing left to prove, will undoubtedly bring his A-game. Stroll, however, is under immense pressure to deliver results and silence his critics. Whether the team can capitalize on the lessons of 2024 will determine if they remain a midfield struggler—or reclaim their place as a serious contender.
