The European Union (EU) is considering supporting the automotive industry of the Old Continent, which has been facing difficulties in recent times, through incentives for the purchase of electric vehicles.
This Thursday, Teresa Ribera, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission, confirmed to the “Financial Times” that European authorities are “fine-tuning” the specifics of this special incentive program.
“It makes sense to consider how we can think, from a pan-European perspective, about facilitating measures instead of resorting to national subsidies”, stated Teresa Ribera on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos.
The words of the Executive Vice-President of the European Commission came after German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced on Wednesday that the European Commission was contemplating a subsidy program that Germany itself had proposed.
It is worth recalling that Germany was one of the European countries that, at the end of 2023, ended its incentives for the purchase of electric vehicles, which, along with strong Chinese competition, contributed to the difficulties faced by the automotive sector in Europe.
