Ferrari’s Fred Vasseur Reveals Emotional Reason Behind Hamilton’s First Fiorano Outing

Lewis Hamilton’s historic first laps as a Scuderia Ferrari driver at the Fiorano circuit weren’t just about shaking off the winter rust—it was a moment steeped in purpose and emotion, according to Ferrari Team Principal Fred Vasseur.

Hamilton, who joined Ferrari for the 2025 Formula 1 season, made his on-track debut in the 2023 SF-23 at Fiorano, delighting fans with his new yellow helmet and unmistakable presence. Alongside teammate Charles Leclerc, Hamilton braved overcast skies to reconnect with the track environment, laying the groundwork for what promises to be a pivotal season.

“A Warm-Up for the Red Army”

Vasseur explained that the test wasn’t about speed or performance but rather about resetting the team’s rhythm after a long winter break:
“Charles and Lewis did their laps in not the best weather, but they got back in the swing of things and immersed themselves in the track environment prior to the first proper test in a month’s time in Bahrain,” Vasseur said. “It was also a warm-up for the team in the garage. That was the sole purpose.”

For Ferrari, pre-season testing often feels like the first day back at school. However, Vasseur admitted that this year’s start carried an extra weight of emotion due to Hamilton’s arrival:
“As is the case every year, the first time you go out on track is a bit like the first day back at school. But today was special—it was Lewis’ first day as part of the team, and that made it an even more emotional moment for everyone involved.”

Hamilton’s Role in Ferrari’s Title Aspirations

Hamilton’s Fiorano debut wasn’t just a symbolic gesture; it’s a precursor to a year where Ferrari aims to reclaim its glory. With the seven-time world champion’s wealth of experience, the Scuderia has high hopes of breaking its championship drought and taking the fight to Red Bull, Mercedes, and McLaren.

“Lewis’ presence is a game-changer,” Vasseur noted. “He’s here to win, and his first steps with the team have already set a tone of determination and focus.”

Eyes on Melbourne

With pre-season testing set to take place in Bahrain, Hamilton’s debut at Ferrari is only the beginning of what could be a transformative journey for the iconic Italian team. All eyes will be on the Prancing Horse as the 2025 season kicks off at the Australian Grand Prix, where Hamilton will aim to take the fight for victories and etch his name deeper into Ferrari folklore.
