NASCAR Cup Series teams will get another chance to experiment with option tires during the March 9 race at Phoenix Raceway, adding an element of strategy and unpredictability to the 312-lap event. The softer compound, which provides additional grip but wears faster, has already made waves in previous races and could play a pivotal role in shaping team tactics.

Details of the Tire Allocation

For the Phoenix race, NASCAR has allocated:

  • One set of option tires for teams to use during practice.
  • Two sets of option tires for the race.
  • Six sets of primary tires for the race.

While teams are required to qualify on the primary tires, they have complete freedom to decide when to deploy the option tires during the race. This flexibility mirrors the parameters set during the August Richmond Raceway event, the first points-paying race to feature the option tire.

The Option Tire: A Game-Changer

The option tire debuted at the All-Star Race at North Wilkesboro Speedway in May 2024 and was praised for adding a new layer of strategy. Its introduction at Richmond saw teams grappling with the balance between the short-term advantage of added grip and the long-term challenge of faster tire degradation.

Phoenix’s flat, one-mile layout presents a unique testbed for the option tire, especially given its blend of long straights and tight corners that demand both speed and durability.

What’s at Stake?

NASCAR has hinted that if the option tire performs well at Phoenix, it could become the primary tire for the November championship finale at the same track. This would eliminate the option tire as a variable for the high-stakes title-deciding weekend but potentially introduce a faster and more exciting baseline for racing.

Strategic Implications

Teams will have to weigh their strategies carefully:

  • Short bursts of speed: Using the option tire during crucial moments, such as late-race restarts, could provide a decisive advantage.
  • Managing wear: With its faster degradation, teams must consider when they can afford to lose durability for grip.

The freedom to deploy the option tire at any time adds another layer of complexity, requiring teams to predict not only their own performance but also the strategies of their competitors.

What to Watch For

  • Driver Adaptation: How quickly drivers adjust to the increased grip and faster wear of the option tire.
  • Team Strategy: The timing of option tire use could make or break a team’s race.
  • Race Dynamics: The potential for increased overtaking and bolder moves as drivers leverage the option tire’s advantages.

The March 9 race at Phoenix could serve as a pivotal testing ground, not just for the tires themselves, but also for the strategies that might define the November championship finale. Fans and teams alike will be watching closely to see if the option tire lives up to its potential as a game-changer in the NASCAR Cup Series.
