Oliver Turvey Joins Williams F1 as Test and Simulator Driver for 2025 Season

Veteran British driver Oliver Turvey has joined Williams Racing as a test and simulator driver, leaving McLaren after over a decade of behind-the-scenes contributions. The 37-year-old, whose F1 career never materialized as a full-time race driver, remains one of the most highly-regarded development drivers in the paddock. His new role at Williams will see him support race drivers Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz while also contributing to the team’s ambitious simulator program.

A Storied Career Behind the Scenes

Turvey’s tenure at McLaren spanned multiple regulation eras, leadership changes, and partnerships with different engine suppliers. During that time, he became a crucial figure in McLaren’s simulator and test programs, helping the team navigate complex technical shifts.

His career highlights include an LMP2 victory at the Le Mans 24 Hours with Jota and stints in Formula E, where he raced for NIO in often uncompetitive machinery. Despite limited opportunities to shine on the racetrack, Turvey earned a reputation as a meticulous and intelligent driver, valued for his feedback and technical acumen.

A Natural Fit for Williams

In a rare public announcement of a test driver hire, Williams heralded Turvey’s arrival as a significant addition to the team. The Briton’s experience will be instrumental as Williams rolls out its new driver-in-loop simulator in late 2025, a cornerstone of its effort to return to competitiveness in Formula 1.

“I have long admired Williams, and watching Damon Hill win the world championship for them inspired me as I began my racing career,” Turvey said. “The ambition and determination driving this project are incredibly inspiring, and I’m excited for the challenge ahead to help bring the team back to the top.”

Williams Sporting Director Sven Smeets added: “Oliver brings a vast amount of experience and expertise that will be invaluable to our progression as we continue to strengthen the team across the board.”

Supporting Albon and Sainz

Turvey’s role will include providing critical development feedback alongside Williams’ established simulator driver, Harrison Scott. Scott, 28, is another technically skilled driver with a history of success in Formula Ford and Euroformula Open but has been out of the competitive racing spotlight for several years.

The duo will play a crucial role in aiding Albon and Sainz as the team looks to close the gap to the midfield and beyond in 2025.

Dual Commitments with DS Penske

In addition to his work with Williams, Turvey will continue to serve as reserve driver for the DS Penske team in Formula E. His extensive simulator and development experience will undoubtedly benefit both programs.

Williams’ Ambitious Vision

The hiring of Turvey underscores Williams’ focus on revitalizing its operations through technical upgrades and experienced personnel. With a strong driver lineup in Albon and Sainz, bolstered by Turvey’s expertise, the team seems determined to climb the F1 grid and recapture its storied legacy.
