Formula 1 is also about constant evolution and working within the regulations to find the best possible solutions for the cars. And Mercedes seems to have found an effective and discreet way to “circumvent” a rule introduced in 2022.
The regulatory framework now requires that the elements of the front wing be connected to the nose cone. And the German team has found a way to replicate the upper flap of 2021 without breaking the rules. To do this, they connected it with a simple carbon fiber wire, thus preserving the potential advantages of the design.
Interpreting the regulations literally, the solution is legal. The space between the outer part of the flap and the chassis should allow for what is called a Y250 vortex. Whether or not there will be decisive advantages thanks to this innovation can only be seen on the track from the Bahrain GP on March 2nd.
