Spire Motorsports Eyes Expansion: Sammy Smith Rumored for Part-Time Truck Series Role in 2025

As the 2025 NASCAR season approaches, Spire Motorsports continues its aggressive overhaul across all levels of competition. Following significant upgrades to its Cup Series lineup, which includes the addition of Michael McDowell, Justin Haley, and veteran crew chief Rodney Childers, the team is now shifting focus to its Truck Series program.

According to reports circulating in the NASCAR community, Sammy Smith, currently a JR Motorsports (JRM) driver in the Xfinity Series, may return to Spire Motorsports for a part-time Truck Series role. If true, this move could further solidify Spire’s intent to compete at the highest levels across multiple series.

Smith’s History with Spire Motorsports

Smith is no stranger to Spire. In 2024, he made a handful of appearances in Spire’s No. 7 truck, securing two top-five finishes and two top-10s in just four starts. These results showcased his ability to adapt quickly and compete at a high level despite limited Truck Series experience.

Now, as Spire gears up to expand its Truck Series operations to four trucks—fielding the No. 7, No. 71, No. 77, and No. 07—Smith could potentially take the reins of the new No. 07 truck for selected races.

JR Motorsports’ Overhaul Opens the Door for a Dual Role

At JRM, the team has undergone its own reshuffling ahead of 2025, bringing in promising talents Connor Zilisch and Carson Kvapil alongside championship winner Justin Allgaier. While Smith retained his Xfinity seat following a strong debut season, the addition of fresh talent might have created room for him to pursue additional opportunities with Spire in the Truck Series.

JRM’s stacked lineup and Spire’s willingness to invest in proven drivers for its Truck program make this rumored partnership logical. Smith’s dual role—competing full-time in the Xfinity Series and part-time in the Truck Series—could give him valuable additional seat time, enhancing his development.

Spire’s Truck Series Expansion

Spire’s 2025 Truck Series plans highlight its ambitious growth trajectory. With Corey Day confirmed to drive the No. 7 truck, the team is strategically positioning itself to be a top contender in the series. Adding Smith to the No. 07 truck on a part-time basis would bring not only experience but also proven results to its lineup.

Smith’s previous success with Spire is a testament to his capability, making him a natural fit for a more expanded role.

A Rising Star with Untapped Potential

Sammy Smith has demonstrated impressive versatility in his young career. His brief but successful stint in the Truck Series in 2024, coupled with a promising Xfinity Series campaign, suggests he has the potential to climb NASCAR’s ranks rapidly. While Smith has never completed a full Truck Series season, his top-five performances in limited starts hint at what he could achieve with more opportunities.

Waiting for Official Confirmation

Although the rumored partnership between Smith and Spire Motorsports is gaining traction, neither party has officially confirmed the deal. However, given Spire’s track record of bold moves and Smith’s proven ability, this partnership seems more a matter of “when” rather than “if.”

As NASCAR’s silly season reaches its final stretch, fans and analysts alike are eager to see how Spire’s aggressive offseason strategy pays off—not just in the Cup Series but also in its ambitious Truck Series expansion. For Sammy Smith, a dual role could mark another milestone in a career filled with potential.
