Lewis Hamilton Declines Early Ferrari Debut, Prefers Private Transition to Iconic Red

Lewis Hamilton’s highly anticipated move to Ferrari officially begins this week as the seven-time world champion makes his debut in Maranello. The Briton’s first run in a Ferrari, a car synonymous with F1’s storied legacy, marks the start of a new chapter in his illustrious career. With the 2025 season looming, Hamilton is wasting no time acclimating to his new surroundings.

A new beginning at Ferrari

Hamilton’s transition to Ferrari has been in the spotlight since his bombshell announcement a year ago. After fulfilling his Mercedes contract through the end of 2024, Hamilton now steps into a car that embodies both immense pressure and unparalleled prestige.

This week, Hamilton will visit Ferrari’s iconic Maranello headquarters for a series of seat fittings, simulator sessions, and his first taste of Ferrari machinery. While Ferrari has kept specific details under wraps, Hamilton is expected to drive the team’s 2023 car at Fiorano, Ferrari’s private test track, by midweek.

Why Hamilton’s early test matters

Hamilton’s initial run in the 2023 Ferrari, permitted under F1’s testing restrictions, is crucial for several reasons:

  • Acclimating to the car: Driving an older Ferrari model will help Hamilton adjust to key differences in seating position, brake feel, and steering wheel configuration compared to the Mercedes cars he’s driven his entire career.
  • Building relationships: Time spent with Ferrari’s engineers, including his new race engineer Riccardo Adami, is vital for establishing trust and communication before the season begins.
  • Understanding the engine: Ferrari’s power units have distinct performance characteristics, particularly in terms of acceleration and directional changes, which Hamilton will need to familiarize himself with.

Challenges of limited testing time

Formula 1’s strict testing rules limit Ferrari to 1,000 kilometers of running with its 2023 car across 20 days. Drivers entered in the championship, like Hamilton, are further restricted to a maximum of four days. To make matters more complicated, these tests must use Pirelli’s less-optimized Academy tires.

With only one official pre-season test scheduled—a three-day session in Bahrain—Hamilton and teammate Charles Leclerc will share limited track time in the new 2025 car. Ferrari is expected to use every opportunity to prepare, including promotional events and filming days, to maximize Hamilton’s exposure to the car before the season opener in Australia.

Pressure and expectations

Hamilton’s move to Ferrari is as much about revitalizing his career as it is about delivering results for the Scuderia. However, both parties are aware that the adaptation process will take time.

“There is a lot that will be different,” Hamilton admitted. “The challenge is to condense the learning process as much as possible.”

Ferrari boss Fred Vasseur and his team are determined to give Hamilton the tools he needs to succeed. Early reports suggest the team has streamlined operations to ensure smoother collaboration between its two star drivers.

What lies ahead

Hamilton’s first test at Fiorano is just the beginning. Ferrari is planning additional runs later this month at more representative circuits like Barcelona to accelerate Hamilton’s integration.

Promotional events, such as a short run at Fiorano after the car launch on February 19, will offer further opportunities for Hamilton and Leclerc to familiarize themselves with Ferrari’s 2025 contender.

While expectations are sky-high, both Hamilton and Ferrari are approaching the season with measured optimism. The pre-season preparation will set the tone, but the real test begins when Hamilton dons the red suit on the grid in Melbourne.
