Kyle Larson, the 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion, has nothing but praise for Hendrick Motorsports and its legendary owner Rick Hendrick. Reflecting on his journey from controversy to redemption, Larson credits his time with HMS as the transformative chapter that propelled him to NASCAR greatness.
A career reborn with Hendrick Motorsports
Larson’s career took a dramatic turn in 2020 after he was suspended for over a year following the use of racist language during a sim race. That setback forced Larson to reevaluate his life and career. When Hendrick Motorsports gave him a second chance in 2021, Larson seized the opportunity with both hands, delivering a dominant season that culminated in a Cup Series championship.
“Everybody wants to end up racing for a team that can showcase their abilities and talents,” Larson told RACER. “Thankfully, we’ve been able to do all of that.”
The Hendrick difference
In his four seasons with HMS, Larson has racked up 23 wins and established himself as one of the top drivers of his generation. He attributes much of his success to the team’s culture and leadership.
“So, I’ve enjoyed my time at Hendrick Motorsports,” Larson said. “Being surrounded by great people is awesome. Rick Hendrick is probably the greatest person I’ve ever had in my life besides my wife, kids, and parents, as far as being a role model.”
Larson also highlighted the influence of Jeff Gordon, who has been a guiding force within HMS, and praised the team’s collaborative and supportive environment.
A look back and forward
Larson admitted that part of him wishes he had joined Hendrick Motorsports earlier in his career. “If I had been there a long time ago, maybe my numbers would be closer to the great-greats of the day,” he mused.
However, Larson is quick to acknowledge the role of his time at Chip Ganassi Racing in shaping him into the driver he is today. “I’m also grateful for my time at Ganassi because I think it’s definitely helped shape me into a better, more well-rounded race car driver.”
As for the future, Larson is committed to staying with Hendrick Motorsports for the long haul. “I hope to be at Hendrick for a very long time,” he said, underscoring his gratitude and ambition to continue building on his legacy with the team.

With Larson’s talent and Hendrick’s resources, the partnership shows no signs of slowing down. The No. 5 driver is already a Cup champion and has plenty of years left to chase more titles.
