Le Mans 2025: Hypercar grid to be supercharged by IMSA’s GTP invasion

The legendary Le Mans 24 Hours is set to witness an unprecedented influx of IMSA’s GTP teams in 2025, as multiple entries aim to secure spots on the prestigious grid. With big names like Porsche, Cadillac, and Corvette leading the charge, the June classic promises a thrilling showdown between endurance racing’s elite.

Porsche aiming for five-car blitz

Porsche Penske Motorsport has already secured a third factory Porsche 963 entry as a reward for clinching the 2024 IMSA GTP title. Beyond that, Proton Competition is reportedly vying for a slot to bring its Porsche 963 to Le Mans, which would elevate the total Porsche presence to a staggering five cars.

Christian Ried’s Proton team is awaiting confirmation from the selection committee, and if granted, Porsche’s presence would solidify its bid to dominate the Hypercar class in one of the most competitive fields in recent history.

Cadillac plotting four-car assault

Cadillac is making bold moves for the 2025 Le Mans, with Wayne Taylor Racing (WTR) and Action Express Racing (AXR) pushing for additional entries. The potential inclusion of these two factory-supported teams would raise Cadillac’s presence to four V-Series.R cars, including the two full-season entries from Cadillac Hertz Team JOTA in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).

Wayne Taylor, owner of WTR, expressed optimism about their Le Mans plans:

“We’ve gained valuable experience from our last two trips to the race. For 2025, we’ll likely send two cars over—one to race and one as a spare—ensuring we’re prepared for any scenario.”

Action Express Racing boss Gary Nelson echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing their commitment to bringing a well-prepared operation to France.

Corvette GT3 contingent ready to shine

General Motors is not stopping at the Hypercar class. Corvette Racing is set to make a splash in the new LMGT3 category, with TF Sport and AWA carrying the iconic American marque’s banner.

TF Sport’s entry will stem from its FIA WEC program, while AWA’s inclusion comes courtesy of Orey Fidani, whose 2024 Bob Akin Award win secured the team’s Le Mans invitation. Fidani expressed his excitement:

“Le Mans has been a lifelong dream. To make this happen, we’re using a second chassis to avoid logistical headaches and teaming up with TF Sport for equipment support.”

A battle for grid spots

The surge of IMSA entries will put pressure on the Le Mans selection committee, as the race already boasts a stacked roster with manufacturers like Ferrari, Toyota, Peugeot, and Aston Martin committed to Hypercar entries. If all the IMSA requests are approved, Le Mans 2025 could feature one of the most diverse and competitive grids in its storied history.

With Cadillac’s four-car campaign, Porsche’s potential five-car lineup, and the Corvette GT3 debut, American teams and drivers are set to leave an indelible mark on endurance racing’s grandest stage.
