Chase Elliott’s illustrious racing career is filled with milestones, but his 2013 victory at the All-American 400 in Nashville stands out as one of the defining moments of his rise to motorsports stardom. “The car had been sitting for a while after qualifying,” Elliott recounted during the FR8 Racing Driver Roundtable. “Ricky [Turner, crew chief] went to check the air in the tires and noticed the left rear tire sticking out more than usual. When he crawled under, he realized the track bar was about a half-lap from breaking off.”
The broken track bar forced Elliott to start at the back of the grid. For most drivers, such a setback would have derailed their race. But for Elliott and his team, it was a rallying cry.
A comeback for the ages
With the track bar repaired just in time for the main event, Elliott began an extraordinary charge through the field. By Lap 149, he had climbed to fourth place and pitted for fresher tires. “To come back and get the job done means a ton to me and my family,” Elliott said. “We put so much effort into this, and it’s great for it to pay off.”
